Hello from New Zealand!

Hey guys,

My name is Antoinette and I am a 21 year old (relatively) NEW Ringneck owner
My little darling is about 10 weeks old (as yet unsexed but taking to the vets on Thursday for the feather plucking), turquoise-blue, that I have named, as you may be able to tell, Skye. I also have a grey male called Jelly who was had reared (not by me) and is quite friendly. In addition to Skye and Jelly I have a yellow female named Daisy and a green male named Snapper who are in an outside aviary. Snapper is pretty chatty but has become a bit wild since we got Daisy as she isn't friendly at all!
I have joined this website for helpful tips on anything Ringneck related and just to swap stories

hi, im evey and i am also a newly ringneck owner and also from new zealand , my beautiful ( im asuming is a boy) is named clover, hes mainly green with quite abit of yellow and a small amount of blue. hes still abit weary of us. but he likes to tease the cats by sticking his head out then pulling it back in lol. hes only 7 weeks .

hi ellie thanks for the welcome .
im from nelson antoinette, what about yourself. i am also 21 years old.
i was wondering if anyone knew about twiming beats.. my baby has a funny lop sided beat i wondered if it needed triming i have a cuttle bone with him but hes not interrested in it.

Hey Evey,

I am in Auckland. I assume you're talking about BEAKS and not BEATS and the fact that you were wondering about triming your IRNs? If this is the case then your best bet would probably be to take it to an Avian vet (as regular vets are ok as long as they are familiar with that sort of stuff - some aren't) and see what they can do. Try grit as well, might help? I'm not an expert but they may help. Also you can get bell things that have an almost sand paper texture on them that may help if he/she is interested in them? Unfortunately it's all about trial and error and if nothing works then a trip to the vet would be recommended

I agree with SkyesMum - I think you need an avian vet to look at that beak. I've never head of an IRN needing a beak trim.

thanks guys. yeh i was have a bell cuttle bone with calcium in his cage but hes not interrested. ill give a the vets a call and see what they can do.
i just read somewhere that you could trim their beaks if it gets out of control. he is only a baby i was just concerned if i left it it would get worse sort of thing.

I completely understand that, Evey. You should absolutely call your vet and see what they think. If a beak gets too long it can cause problems for the bird in relation to eating etc. I have a cockatiel and a budgie whose beaks need to be trimmed every now and again due to the same problem.
