I need some tips. I will be moving next month and driving about 18-20 hours to my new home. We will split it into 2 days though. I keep my IRN Dalek in a large flight cage, but I also have a much smaller cage that I will use for traveling purposes. I have had him in my car before, but that was when I first got him and only drove about 45 mins home. He was in a box and very scared, but I put on some soothing music and talked to him and he calmed down. I know this trip will be stressful. In addition I will have 2 dogs with me. They have traveled before and do very well. They just lay down and relax. Anyone have any tips on traveling with a bird? Should I keep the cage covered? Uncovered? Birds dont get carsick do they?
Any tips appreciated! Thanks

Hi!
The smaller cage is a good idea, and try putting him where he can see you. Put on some music that he likes.
My IRN travels with me in the car when we go to town, it took awhile, but he got used to it. Try driving short distances with your bird in the small cage, so that he can get used to the car and the cage.
The birds don't seem to like being covered, and prefer seeing their surroundings.
As for getting carsick, my one parrot does, but my IRN has never had that problem so you should be fine in that department.
Hope this helps

Is your bird calm when you leave him outdoors or does he get excited and flap around in his cage? Do your dogs excite him when they get close? If yea to any of these then you'd best keep him covered if not go for Anris advice. Remember to hydrate him regularly.

Thanks for the tips. Hes fine with the dogs. They all walk around the apartment together and coexist. He chases the dogs and growls at them sometimes but they just walk away haha.
I think ill just keep him uncovered and bring a blanket just in case. He is only 7 months old but hes pretty fearless in new circumstances. Ive had him outdoors and he just seems mesmerized by everything, So he will probably enjoy looking around. Its just going to be such a long trip, it makes me a bit nervous.

My bird does the exact same thing when we go outside! just looks at everything
I'm sure your baby will be fine. As long as he's used to the car and cage, he'll be comfortable.
Maybe it will help if you stop once in a while and just let him relax, because I know my bird gets tired from all the swaying in the car.
If you put him on a seat, remember to put a blanket or towel under the cage, so that it's more or less level for your birdie
