IRNs and Alexandrines

Post by BangZipPow »

Hi
I've looked all over for an Alexandrine board, but couldn't find one. So I was hoping someone here could explain the differences between an IRN and an Alexandrine. From what I've read so far, the Alexandrines are larger and have a somewhat calmer disposition(?). Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You can see the size difference here, I have both :)

She's probably even bigger now, I havent taken a recent pic, and she was only 4 months old in that photo.

I don't think she's any calmer than the IRN's... she's active and into trouble and playing all the time. Her voice is a different pitch, and she scents like an amazon.

I have known other Alex's to get aggressive if not handled enough, so it bears paying attention to.

Thanks for the photo, it is so helpful! I have had a parrotlet for about 4 years, and I was thinking about getting a second bird in another year or two. I think the Alexandrines and Rignecks are quite beautiful, but I am worried about the Ringnecks being too nippy.

you'll love it

from what i have seen Alexandrines are bigger versions, and their calls are ALOT louder.

I really think it depends on the way the bird was raised.

Alice came from an exceptional breeder, was parent raised for six weeks, and then handfed until she was read to wean on her own. She was fully flighted until the day she left to come home to me, and encouraged to explore and enjoy the world.

She is very quiet. She talks a bit, and has a trill that means "Come get me, I need attention" but I have NEVER heard her scream. Not once. Never.

My friend has her brother and he's a bit louder (he imitates her amazons) but she's never heard him scream either. They are just very happy babies.

I have another friend who visits the breeder often (she is good friends with her, thats how I found my baby actually) and last time she was there she was playing with Alice's parents. When they aren't on eggs they are as tame as can be, and almost too friendly :).

If you get one, do your research, and find the very best breeder and parent birds possible... it really does pay off in the end.

great videos!

Wow, those videos are so cute! But it's a wonder all that macaroni doesn't make the birds sick. The only junk food mine gets is the occasional piece of cookie or cornbread. They are such smart animals.

Thanks for the advice about the breeders. I will have to look around for a good one when I get more serious.
