Help new IRN owner :-)

Post by Mutley »

I purchased a green IRN today and am not sure of its sex is there anyway I am able to find out now? I was informed it was born August last year. I am also wondering what is the best way for me to tame it if I can at 11 months of age. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you

Hey Kylie,

Welcome! :) As it stands right now your ringneck is under a year so you really can't tell by looking at him/her. But a mature male ringneck will have the ring that comes in around 18 months - 3 years. Females don't get this ring.

Some signs that might help--though might be too soon--females will tilt their head back, slightly open their wings and cluck. Males will bow and pin their eyes--wings and tail slightly opened. Although be careful as my females also display.

Also, my females quickly tilt their head back (all of them) when i call to them and pin their eyes--none of my males do this behavior.

If you really want to know now get a DNA test as it's cheap and quick. -- check this link out : avianbiotech.com

Hope this helps

Thank you Imran I appreciate your feedback I will look into the DNA side of things. At present he/she isn't doing much apart from getting spooked when i go near the cage. I have named it Rex and if by chance its a her i will change it to Roxy lol Rex came out of a avery where he has been on his own so i am gathering that all this interaction from me will take a bit for him to get used to. I haven't attempted to handle him as yet cause i dont want to freak him out anymore than I need to.

Thank you
Kylie
