New to breeding, please help!

Post by Sbreton89 »

We have had Poco, our male, for a year now, and just recently added LuLu, a female, to our family. I am interested in breeding, however I have absolutely NO experience. How do I get the birds used to each other, as both were always alone? What exactly do I need to buy to provide the best mating environment? Any advice would be appreciated! Also, I am in NY (EST), when is breeding season? Thank you in advance!

We place the boxes in generally mid winter. Our first eggs are normally laid withing the first few weeks of spring.

Ringnecks dont become sexually mature until around 2 years old. Breeding proir to this can be dangerous to the hen.

hi and welcome the best way is to get them used to each other is by putting them in separate cages and placing them next to each other and in time you should see them sleeping as close as they can possibly get together being in separate cages once that happens you can put them together in the same cage. breeding season in the US is pretty much over so if you start getting them used to each other now they will be ready when the next season starts. you should see the male start feeding the female thats when you know they are really bonded. in late november put up their nest box (12'x12'x24' deep) and keep a good eye on them cause sometimes the females get aggressive and attack the male if he wants to breed before she does. i live in louisiana and my pairs usually start laying late february or march hope this helps you good luck mike
