New here!

Post by PinkPenguin »

Hi everyone!

I and my girlfriend are new to Indian Ringnecks. We just got a new bird (not DNA sexed) who we have named Popcorn. For now we're calling her a "she", but we don't really know, hehe.

She's a gorgeous cremino, in great health according to the vet (ironically, we brought her home and the FIRST thing she did was get spooked and break a feather, so we took her to our ER vet right away). She's bright and alert and her droppings are normal -- all good signs. We've seen her drink, but not eat so far.

I did mean to ask, and I can ask in another area of the forum if necessary: What do people think about the best methods for calming her and helping with the screaming? I don't mind it, honestly, and she's not ALWAYS doing it, but I get the feeling she's doing it for a reason and if I could figure that out, I could almost eliminate it. We've been trying the "walk out of the room" method and that seems to cause her to get quiet quickly. I've been reading threads on this, but I'm worried that she's calling for a reason and I can't figure out what it is!

Thanks in advance. :) Pictures to come!

Is it a scared type of scream, like frantic? Does she lunge at anything when she is screaming? Is there anything near her cage, any other pets such as cats or dogs? It could be a lot of things. Maybe just adjusting to the new environment. When I first got my bird, I would make it a habit to have breakfast in front of her cage. I would give her little things from my plate like grapes or banana, and that got her acquainted with me pretty quickly. I know birds can be kind of quirky, mine chases car reflections that drive by and the ceiling fan shadow. Try to put yourself in her position and look around the room. You might be able to spot what it is, if it's not your presence that's bothering her. If it is your presence, she'll get use to it.

Hi and welcome.

My birds scream or call out at certain times of the day, usually early in the morning, (my wake up call  ), and late in the afternoon.
If the calls sound similar to above, you could try offering her something to keep her occupied like toys, treats, foraging ideas, BEFORE she starts the screaming.
My birds usually start around 3-4 pm for an hour or two. The aviary birds do not bother me, (but probably the neighbours disagree  ), but the indoor birds can get quite noisy when they all get going. Before they start their 'session', I swap toys around, reload the foraging toys, scrunch up paper for them to shred, pop in a tempting bird safe branch for them to chew or even just fruit and veg will keep them quiet for a while.
