is 10 years too old to train?

Post by Willson1992 »

Hey, I'm new to this forum but it seems pretty helpful so far.
my parents have had a male indian ringneck for around 9-10 years now.
and have just passed him down to me.

He's lively and healthy, and has his black "beard" as i call it, with a pink tint to his back feathers

He seems happy, as he doesn't scream (That often), or "rage" around his cage.

I'm not sure if hes been hand fed as they bought him when he was about 1

He's got a healthy diet of seeds, and occasional treats i.e nuts and fruits.

So far he can Whistle a few things, like "swit Swoo",

and he mutters to himself in a friendly way

he very rarely bites, only if something startles him (i.e another person in the room whilst he's on my hand)

I can stroke his head, and he will put his head down on command and let me kiss the back of his neck.

So we have somewhat of a "bond", or a decent relationship... I Think he trusts me.

but he's not speaking yet.
I was wondering if 10 years old is too late to train him to speak, just little words like "good boy" or "hello"

if it's not too old,
Can anybody help me out with some tips and/or routines to help

Thankyou in advance

its never to late to try...

it wont be easy, as they learn most when theyre younger. if you just want help with talking, and you have already taught him some things, you might be lucky. my friends bird, coco, picks up and drops new sayings often and hes about 6 or 7.

the trick is repetition, use the same greeting all the time, in the same tone. and you can do little training sessions about 10 mins long. I recorded a 10 talking session i put on my ipod that i play when im not around, but its best if you can do it yourself. start with one phrase, like 'hello buddy' or whatever. if that gets picked up then move on to others.

i'd say give it a shot, its not going to hurt, but remember that not all birds are talkers, so dont feel disappointed if its not. im talking mostly from what ive read and been told, not experience - iggy has never been a great talker and i didnt push the issue - but hopefully its helpful all the same
