out IRN will not let us touch him

Post by Janus »

Hi all...

We've had our IRN now for about 4 months now and we love him to bits. When we first got him he used to bite us so much (draw blood). After constance work and trust he has now stopped and will come on our fingers.

We all want to stroke him, but he will not allow us to do this. He starts to bite each time we try.

Is there anyway we can move him to the next step and start to build his trust with touching him?

Regards

Jamie

Hello, i'm not a IRN expert but i have budgie training, in my "cv" :P
Try to treat him with special seeds or any fruit he likes when he goes on your fingers, he might feel like he's acting well. spend time talking to him, so he feels like a part of the flock, as in your family. Try to teach him basic words or sounds, so he feels more confortable.
Also, in the case of one of my budgies, he doesnt mind going on and off my fingers or me stroking him on the chest, but if i try to touch him on the neck he goes beserker, there's no point in making an animal feel threatned and scared.
So another advice would be that to take a really slow approach, and slowly start touching here and there, nothing agressive! :P or he'll feel raped!

Good luck =) Hope it helps

try gently putting him up to your chest and placing a towel/tea towel over him so he cant wriggle too much (watch your fingers) gently give him a scratch on the head for short periods of time, also talk to him in a calming way while you are doing it and tell him what you are doing eg scratch, step up ect. Also try touching him after he has had a bath, they seem more mellow after a bath.
