2 New Ringnecks, colour and gender question!

Post by Jen144 »

Hi all

Just got 2 new Ringnecks (rescues, age unknown unfortunately) and I'm wondering what their colours/genders are. I know one is a Grey male (apparently about 1-2 years old), only because I already have a Grey male :D
The other, however...I have no idea. On gender, colour, OR age! So any input is VERY welcome, thanks in advance!!

Some pics.. With regards to body-colour, the second last photo is the most accurate..he/she is a very pale skyblue/grey-ish colour, dark eyes (not red). I was thinking Cinnamon Blue or even Lacewing Blue (are their eyes red or black?)

And a picture of the Grey male, who I'm thinking would be closer to 2 or 3 years old, to have his ring already?

Sorry the pics aren't that great, but he/she is very wary of the camera and it is dark here at the moment. :) But I hope it works, please reply soon!

Hi,

Hard to say with those pics ... but I can tell you that he/she is not pallid. He/she looks like a young bird if you look at his/her iris and thus to know the gender you need to sex him/her. Colour could be turquoise (pastel) or turquoise-cinnamon (pastel cinnamon) ... look at his/her nails colour. May be pied? ... really need better pics for accurate advise.

Regards.

Hi;

These are much better pics !!!

I think it is an adult bird, probably several years old, because of her eyes and bec "marks". If this is the case it must be a female (there is not ring). Which mutation: to me it looks blue cinnamon (look at the nails colour) but under some lights she seems to display some greenish feathers. If this is the case she would be a turquoise-cinnamon (pastel cinnamon).

Thank you very much for the answer! It's good to know what colour/age/gender she is. :) The Grey male, he'd be a couple of years old also, correct? (what with him having a ring)

Hi;

The male is an adult male since he displays a ring. Ring can appear as soon as at the first year (usually a thin and non complete ring) but usually it happens at 2 or 3 years old. In my experience males displaying a ring at 3 years are bigger than when they display it at an earlier age, probably like in humans: reaching sexual maturity induces a stop in growth.
