A little confused with Toki's recent behaviour...

Post by ~emma~ »

Hi everyone,

We got Toki last Saturday, and he has been wonderful. He is cheeky and loves to chew my fingers, ears etc, but he has been really tame and settled in well. He likes to come into the shower with me and just stand under the water with his wings open until I get out. Its quite cute!

We were going away for a couple of days and my good friend agreed to mind him while we were gone. She lives not too far from me so I thought this worked out well because I didn't want Toki to be too nervous about travelling. But it seemed that he was quite okay with the trip in the car and when I took him inside to my friend's place and set his cage up, he was very calm. I missed him terribly while we were away!

We got home today and picked Toki up from my friend's house. I was so happy to see him! I went to give him a piece of carrot (which I had not previously tried him with) and he tried to get away from it as fast as he could! My friend said they did the same thing once and he seemed scared of it so they didnt attempt to again. They said that while he was there he was great, he was a little 'bitey' but he was content with sitting on top of his cage and exploring his surroundings. They handled him and fed him sultanas which he loves, they basically did everything that I do.

Anyway, at home, Toki was doing his usual exploring, but he seemed a little cranky. He made a couple of cranky little chirps so I let him be for a while, thinking that perhaps he was a bit grumpy from being moved around a bit between my house and my friend's house. He then seemed to get over it and flapped his way over to where I was (after flapping around on the floor- he has clipped wings). I played with him a bit and he got up on my shoulder. He was trying to eat my glasses and I put my finger up for him to step up and he let out, almost like a shriek like he was telling me off!! It scared the hell out of me lol This is the first time he did that.

Anyway, a little while later I thought I might try and give him a piece of mandarine. He got really scared of it and tried to fly away! I started to wonder if he had an issue with the colour orange after being scared of the carrot as well?

And then when I sat him on top of his cage where he likes to perch, he turned toward the wall and stayed like that, very reluctant to step up when I put him to bed!

I am probably overreacting but I just sensed a difference since we got back and I wasn't sure whether it was because of the car trip, not seeing me for a couple of days or just him being a grumpy bum lol It kinda hurt my feelings a bit, which I know is a bit silly, but I love him to bits, he's like my baby! :P

He's 11 weeks old...

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have read of some birds 'punishing' their owners with a bite after the owner has been away. Hane gets grumpy too when he hasn't seen me around. I am curious about the orange food theory though!

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay

We haven't been separated from our babies much recently... but I remember when Janey was little we used to sometimes leave her with my husband's dad to look after. When we brought her home she would go quiet for a day or so... I think she got used to where she was and had to readjust back to home... Apparently she was the same when we dropped her off... she would be quiet-ish for a day but then got used to her new surroundings.
