Easily trainable?

Post by BmDubb »

Ok, sorry to post two questions so fast, but I have to questions regarding two different things lol.

The bird I got definitely needs work. He isnt aggressive at all. Hes VERY healthy and eats like a pig. ( when out / on the cage ) 90% of the time He " runs " from you when you try to get him to perch on your hand but when he gets to the edge of the cage he will climb on your hand / finger, and have no problem walking all over yours arms, hands, shoulders and head. He LOVES taking treats out of my pinched fingers, and will actually come to me to take a treat GENTLY from my fingers. I even let him take treats out of my own mouth, hes so easy with me lol.

( When inside the cage ) 90% he runs around the cage until he gives in and then climbs on the finger and then when you bring him out of the cage he acts like I stated above.
Also if you try to " pet or scratch his head " from the outside of the cage while hes inside he like " opens his mouth ' and looks at you and moves as if he wants to bite.. but never bites ( never once ).

To me, it seems like hes just " nervous ". He seems to be " comfortable " around people but not completely relaxed . The girl I got him from said this is the exact way he was with her the whole time shes had him since he was 3 months...

NOTE: I've only had him 2 days.

Firstly, you are doing really well for two days. It takes the birds a long time to settle in... the other thing to note is that if you push the bird too hard before it is ready, things that it does for you now, it may get its back up later when he understands more of what is going on.

Do you have an out-of-cage area where you can interact with him such as playstand or a birdie gym. If you want to train him to do tricks, etc.... which is a great way to build a bond, having a training area is really useful.

If you want to start training I recommend the turnaround as a good place to start: See http://www.indianringneck.com/forum/vie ... und#p65327

I think chasing him around the cage to get him out isn't ideal.... how do you go with coaxing him out using his favourite food?

I hope that helps.

There are lots of people with similar problems to yours, I suggest you look through some of the threads in the behaviour and training forum.

Good luck!

Ellie.
