Hello. A few questions

Post by AmbersIRN »

Im getting a IRN today, actually the people are suppose to be on there way with him. Im told he is about 3 years old, just got his black ring and talks. He is blue too.
Im told he needs a little work. The guys says you have to catch him to hold him, but he dosnt bite. Just more independent i guess? Is this due to lack of time wspent with him or just because he is independent? And will he ever get out of this? I will see after I get him what he is like(but I am very excited to get the lil guy! Ive had conures, keets, teils, but never IRNS :) )
But I am new! We are from ohio! Now im off to explore the new forum haha :)
And feedback would be GREAT!!

Thanks
Amber

I got him a little bit ago. He is very flighty haha. But dosnt bite at all. He makes thet kinda huffy hiss noise at you though as though to say "get away" but when your hand gets there he wont bit it. He just trys to act tuff.. He acts a bit funny about getting on your hand. You spend more time kinda chasing him trying to get him then anything.. I tried just holding my hand in his cage and not chase him and he got out and flew all around the room. I kept walking over to him and he'd fly. Then he kept flying into the window then finally gave in and hoped on my finger. He let me talk to him, he stepped up, and even would give me kisses. But he just would rather fly then spend time with me. I think if I give him more time and attention he wont mind being on or around me. He does seem to be a bit attached to his cage :/.. But im just very thankful he dont bite! His beak looks as big(if not a bit bigger) then my old quaker i use to have... She use to bite holes in my fingers! ouch!! lol.. I cant think of a good name for him though. The guy i got him from said he called him blue bell. so maybe blue? Hmm...

Hi Amber

I suggest you try to win him over with food. It will take time but in the end I think it may be more rewarding for you and less scary for your bird if you let him choose to spend time with you rather than chasing him down. If you keep him flighted this process will take longer... Given that he has probably always been flighted, it's probably not a good idea to clip his wings? It's also important that he can spend time observing you when you are not focused on him. It's a good idea to put his cage somewhere that you spend a lot of time doing other things.

Good luck. Congrats on your new bird. Welcome to the forum.

I was thinking about clipping his wings, but may give him a few days to settle down first. I havnt really tried chasing him(except when he got out of the cage to fly) because I dont want to scare him. Do they like seed millet? My conures did. So I was just curious to see if IRNs do too. Ive been doing allot of research, but havnt came across that yet lol :). Thanks for the reply by the way!

They like millet. I give mine french millet and millet sprays at certain times... although both of them didn't know what a millet spray was first time I gave it to them... and I scared them with it.

I also feed them budgie seed (which is mostly millet). Our petstore recommended budgie seed when we wanted to withdraw sunflower seeds from their main diet. I alternate between seed & pellets. I also feed them daily fruit & veg.

With my birds I use granulated nuts as rewards. I like them because they're so small. I will also give them some of what I'm eating if it is safe for them. In the morning, I will give them some banana from my breakfast cereal.

If you want to tame him down, a great way is to have him out of the cage when you are eating. IRNs will get very curious when you are eating. You can share some of your food with him - just make sure it is safe for him to eat.

I'd be interested to know what others think about clipping his wings at 3 years of age. I'm wondering if it would distress him a lot if he's never had them clipped before? I really have no idea.

Best wishes.
