BITING OR GROOMING ME?

Post by prettygirl »

Howdy everyone. I need a little more help on Pretty Girl and her chewing. Her cage is by my chair so she can come to me any time I sit down. As I mentioned in a previous posting she loves to chew on my watch band. The problem is that she pinches the skin while she is chew on the watch band. :( If I take my watch off she starts chewing on my cloths and then reaches over and pinches my skin. I'm not sure if she is trying to groom me, but it seems like she is just trying to pinch my skin. I've started telling her no and put her back on her perch, but she comes right back so I get up and leave. When I tell her now she pins her eyes and gets very mad. Previous advise was to get up and walk away, but she just waits for me to come back. I've tried puting a towel on exposed skin and she goes some place else looking for skin. Do you all think she is being mean  or is she grooming?

Hi,
I did not see what your previous posting or replies were. I have a bird that while on my shoulder would nibble and sometimes bite my skin. I think he was bored. If he bit me I would say no and move my head so he would have to reposition himself on my shoulder. If the mibbling tickled I would say no and move my head so he would have to reposition himself on my shoulder. If he did not stop, he would be placed on his perch or his cage. If he put up a fit, I would lock him in his cage. In your situation, you are letting your bird get away with too much. You are not a play toy. You are the boss. It is going to take alot of time to break him of this bad habit. Perhaps when he runs down your arm, put him back on your shoulder or his perch, again and again and again. Because he will try and try and try! One other effective means for discipline is a water mist. If he continues to misbehave squirt him with the water mister. But always say no and why. I know he can't understand entirely but he'll get the main point. Anither suggestion could be to get him a stand with play toys on it. I have a wonderful floor stand that has hooks on the ends for toys and bird treats. It has a wide floor base for all of the seeds and poop to fall with a vinyl covering for easy clean up. It is homemade, but I have seen many of varieties of perches at stores. That way when he misbehaves, distract his attention with a nice bell on a colorful toy. Hope this helps!
