Bird is really nervous

Post by xlillethdeathx »

I bought a indian ring neck two weeks ago because I needed one to keep my other one company.

The one I have is completely tame and loves affection, hand reared etc.

But when I bought this bird, I have found she had an owner beforehand who use to neglect her and the owner that I bought her from kept her in a cage with an african grey parrot which attacked her all the time. Needless to say when I bought her, she had no toys or perches in the cage she had placed in for the past 4 days :/

I have bought a suitable cage, plenty of toys but it refuses to do anything. It really is afraid of anything approaching it, it only seems alright when the budgies cage is besides it .

Any tips on helping me tame her or be more confident?

give her time!!!!!
she sounds like life has been very harsh for her
bless you for taking her in and having the smarts to ask here for the best way to get her comfortable
having a very tame bird too will help greatly in showing her you are a SAFE person who will not hurt her
dont push her would be my main advice
talk to her offer her treats have her cage near your main space (where you spend the most time )
so she can watch you while you are doing things that require your focus (tv reading & computor )
a very important tip is let her see you eat!!! she now looks on you as the biggest bird in her flock
therefore when you are eating it id safe for her to eat & relax
let her see how you interact with your other birds
& last but not least can we see pics?

I don't have a great deal of experience with birds but when my family adopted our current IRN she behaved in a very similar way. Try finding a treat that she really loves, and see if you can bribe her with that. If you ever eat near her cage (e.g. have breakfast or coffee where she can see you) look to see if she's watching you and offer a small piece of what you're eating (if it's appropriate) or keep a suitable treat on the edge of your plate in case she takes an interest. I'm not sure if this is the case with all IRN's but food was certainly the way to our girls heart!

As for the toys and things she might be a little scared of them if she isn't used to having branches, and things to play with, so she probably just needs some time to settle in :)

It's awesome that you're trying so hard to take good care of her, she's obviously much better off!

a good treat to use for taming & traing puposes is popcorn i used air dried all my birds love it & its a good one to use just for training as not having it in the cage all the time dosent detract from the every day diet
