Hello from NZ

Post by SamSteers »

Hello everyone - my name is Sam and my wife is Bronwyn and we live in Auckland New Zealand.
We are new to owning Parrotts but find them great little mates and very entertaining. Our 3 grandaughters haven't met the birds yet but i am sure they will love them.
I would like to say thanks to the makers of this forum and the website, we have learnt alot already from info found here.
We have 2 - 12 week old Ringnecks, a green one called Oscar and a yellow one called Peanut.
Our Rottweiler dog (Tank) is a bit jealous but is slowly coming around to thier presence and i am hoping they will become good mates in time.

I hope everyone had a great Xmas and we wish you all a happy and prosporous new year.

Hey Sam,
Welcome to the crazy, yet rewarding world of IRN ownership, (and I mean THEM owning YOU!! lol). Where they will lull you into a false sense of security, thinking you rule the household, where infact, you wait on them hand and foot, buying them toys, toys and more toys. Forgoing that chocolate cake because your feathery bundle wants mango, paw paw and all the other top shelf, high priced fruit and vegie items as a treat. Where you think the new 'triple story birdie manor' you just purchased maybe isn't quite big enough, or the lovingly hand crafted birdie stand that you sweated, (& swore) over, sits in the corner gathering dust and providing a nice little spider nature reserve, while your beaky mate prefers to perch on the highest curtain rod for a better birds eye view of your day to day activities.
Then when they have tested the last of your patience by shredding great great grandmas hand knitted from hand spun wool doilies, they tilt their head on the side, look at you with those hypnotising eyes and mutter their first ever word...."helloooooo".

Yep, being owned by a ringie sure is fun!!

Thanks for the reply's.
Well ...... being owned by the cute little feathery friends is right, but they are great.
We normally get home from work and on goes the TV and thats our entertainment for 6 nights a week but since we had these guys we sit out on the deck with them and even cook breakfast and dinner on the BBQ so we can interact and play with them, they are funny little guys.
Our granddaughters just love them to bits as well, they pull up their chairs in front of their cage and watch them and talk and play for hours, I did not realise they could be so life changing in just a matter of days ...... obviously they are good trainers and we must be quick learners .....lmao

Tank the rotty is lots more comfortable with them as well. He was pretty jealous at first but is pretty much OK with them now and only makes his presence known when we don't pay him attention at the same time as the birds.

Oscar (the green IRN) is the bolshy one and likes to be the centre of attention while Peanut (yellow IRN) is quite a bit more laid back and takes things in her stride (we think she's a her anyway) untill it comes to bath time then Oscar doesn't get a look in.
I figure we still have a lot to learn but i'm sure they will teach us in thier own good time.
