Feeding babies 3 wks old

Post by morry »

Hi I have 2 babies that dont really want to feed. I have used the spoon and have also used a syringe. I am feeding them with the hand raising food.
Should I be worried if they dont have a big crop. I think they spill more than they eat.

Has anyone else have probs with feeding.

I have reared weiros with no probs. But these are harder.
Thanks

Ringnecks are kinda hard to feed. My cockatiel at day 1 has more of a feeding response. Do you use a bent hand rearing spoon or a normal one.
Keep trying. One of my ringnecks was fairly hard to feed. As long as they are eating I wouldnt worry too much. Also you could try feeding more often if they take less. I was feeding them 5 times when they should have been on 3 feeds a day. The feeding "rules" are in reality just guides.

They should be getting fed every 4 hours at that age.

Don't worry about them eating slowly, i am handraising 11 of them at the moment, some are a pain is the @ss and others are good.
Sometimes, they will have a better feeing response if the formula is a little bit hotter, nut not too hot as they may get crop burn.

Hi thanks for that. Actually they have just done better this avo than yesterday. I am using both syringe and spoon with the sides bent up so that their beak just fit into the centre of it . we did that so as to try not to spill so much of the food. But I have gone back to the syringe tonight. And they did well tonight actuallhave a bit of a crop at last.. Thanks again

HI , Thanks for that. Yes I used to feed weiros. but I waited till they had their feathers. Although still about same size at these I suppose. We wer using a spoon with the sides bent up so as to stop food spilling out more. Also I have had more luck tonight they actually have a small crop tonight. And I used a new syringe the other one kept sticking so hard to control.
Thanks again.
