Hi my name is Maggie, i live in MA and i do not own an Indian Ringneck. I have had a few birds during the course of my life, two parakeets, and a Cockatiel. I joined this site so that i could figure out whether or not a ringneck would be a smart choice of bird for me to have as a pet. I'm looking for an intelligent bird that requires a lot of my time and attention (when i'm not working of course) I find myself very alone most of the time and am in serious need of a companion. I want a bird that i can lavish toys and attention on and will return my attention with a lot of talking to fill in those empty quiet spaces with singing and talking. I figure that what i'm looking for is there in most bird species, but i'm also unfortunately having to think of my budget. I'm of course willing to get as many toys, as big of a cage and spend money on as much food or whatever a parrot needs, which is why i'm looking for a less expensive bird i guess, so i can spoil it rotten with its perfect environment and toys lol. I guess i just want an intelligent pet that i can interact with. I love birds, always have since i was a little girl and constantly was over the "Bird mans" house to spend time with his menagerie of birds. I may have had a few birds before, but they were few and far in between so I don't have the expertise or know how that long time owners have, but i do have the love and patience that i believe is needed. I don't want to get a pet bird though and find that its personality is not fitted to mine and have to give it up, that is the last thing i am wanting to do.
I've read a lot about the ringneck its general personality type (of course like a human birds have different personalities lol) its care needs, what foods it needs and everything else, but i want to know from those of you who do own one, if its an option for me. I don't want to get into this blind, because i want to give whatever parrot i do choose the best home, environment and care i can. If you don't believe this is the right bird for me, please give me some options to choose from, so that i can research and prepare for it as best as i can. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Hi Maggie and welcome
Another bird to consider would be an Alexandrian, they are bigger than a IRN but they are very docile. Irns take a fair amount of patience while taming, unless you manage to get a perfect one straight away. They also go through bluffing which can be quite interesting.
While I highly recommend Indians I also acknowledge they may not be for everyone.

Thank you for your suggestion and concern. I'm not worried about the bluffing, i've researched this bird and its possible behavioral issues extensively and i know i can deal with and be patient with an IRN's bluffing stage. I deal with even more annoying humans on a daily basis and have the patience to divert or lessen their aggravation, it may not be a glamorous job but i am a Security Officer. I'll look into the Alexandrine, see if that is a possibility for me, but truthfully i am hoping that i am able to own and properly train an IRN because they are beautiful birds, and from what i've seen on youtube a delight to have around the house because of their quirky and fun nature.
