Hi from an Australian Ringneck owner!

Post by noodle »

I live in Melbourne, Australia and have a 7 month old ringneck named Larry living with my husband and me. He is the second ringneck I've owned - my first, Ned, flew away and broke my heart. Two years later I couldn't resist the idea of getting a new bird and baby Larry came into my world at the age of 12 weeks. I met him newly hatched and would visit the breeder weekly to watch him grow. I just want to say hi - and to affirm that a lovingly reared, gently handle ringneck can be incredibly affectionate! Larry likes to fall asleep on my chest when I lean back on the sofa watching telly. He is the cuddliest little fella you ever did see. He is also very ell adjusted socially - goes to other people almost immediately. NEVER bites in anger. Uses his beak lots to check things out and we have a 'play fight thing' where he lunges and moths my hand but has never so much as pinched me hard. He is a total honey - I am not teaching him to talk, starting with whistles and moving on to words. Have clipped his wings to keep him close to home and safe, but other than that, he's a perfect specimen. Comes outside to watch while I work on the house and LOVES to shower with my husband or me. He is very good at shredding paper, also likes singing along to Elvis Presley and classical music. Feed him a pelleted diet plus fresh fruit and veg. he has come camping with us a couple of times - though i think he just prefers home. He is a great bird.

Welcome Noodle and Larry. :)

They really know how to work their magic, friendly or tame, into your heart don't they?

I have a few ringies and one green bub is the most gentle little one I have ever owned while another, a lutino, is the total opposite! Both were bred by my birds. :)

Looking forward to seeing photos and hearing more about Larry. :)

Larry on his way

Post by noodle »

I have some pix of Larry as an infant and also will get some more recent ones. Will get my act together and do this soon! Promise...

He is filling out really well - though I went back to my breeder on the weekend and asked if they had anything I could feed him to bulk him up a little faster. He is on a pelleted diet (has been since birth) and is really healthy but I think should be a little bigger for his age (born mid November 2008). He is ALREADY showing a feint black neck marking - surprising - but seems a little thin. Though he LOVES his food - he eats corn and apple and other fruit and veg on his kebab stick like there's no tomorrow! I put his pellets with a little water and pureed corn and he eats some of this but not a huge amount daily... Anyway the breeder has sold me a slightly different mix for breeding hens/and cocks and bulking up birds so hope that does the trick! Any other ideas welcome!!
