Hooray our first egg
HI everyone we have had our first pair of IRN 4 weeks today. Yesterday morning i went in to feed them, I noticed large runny droppings under the perch where the hen sits, so i knew something must be happening. Yes when i opened the box there it was our first egg. I called everyone who would listen to me we are all thrilled. I am shocked as i have only ever seen the hen going in the box once. This morning when i went in to check them she was still sat on the perch, so i looked in the nest box and at first i could not see the egg so i got very upset, as i thought that one of them must of eaten it (i had experienced this with a pair of English budgies i had last year). So i thought it had gone, with closer inspection in the box i could not find any yoke or shell so i looked again and there it was she had buried it in the shavings it was not warm so i assume that she is not sitting on it yet . I was so relived, I do have a few questions if any one can help me do INR bury there eggs and i wonder why she had ? They do not seem to be eating the soft food i am putting in i am putting grated carrot and apple and the fruit in to tempt the but they are not really touching it so is there something i can use? When will she start to sit on the eggs? What time of day do they generally lay there eggs, i know budgies lay in the afternoon do INR have a particular time of day? Sorry for having so many questions but i know everyone is very helpful here thanks karen x

Hello Karen, I will try to ask your questions with a limited experience but a lot of reading (I hope more experienced breeders will also answer to you):
Hope this could help you

As much as I know IRN do not bury their eggs. Probably the hen is still "working" the nest and some shavings went on the egg.I do have a few questions if any one can help me do INR bury there eggs and i wonder why she had ?
You should have begun to offer this food before. Now they keep on eating what they are used to, but do not worry, after a while they will eat everything. Try to give pieces of fruits (or the whole fruit) instead of grated fruits. Usually it works better. They do not seem to be eating the soft food i am putting in i am putting grated carrot and apple and the fruit in to tempt the but they are not really touching it so is there something i can use?
It depends but usually after having laid the third egg. There after the hen begins sitting and the first baby will go out 23-24 days later. When will she start to sit on the eggs?
Usually in the mid-morning every two days. What time of day do they generally lay there eggs, i know budgies lay in the afternoon do INR have a particular time of day?
Hope this could help you

Thanks Recio I have only had the pair 4 weeks and i did start giving them soft food as soon as they came i give all my birds soft food all year round. But i think they may not have been used to it before. I was not sure about the egg been buried as this is my first pair of ringnecks i know none of my other birds have done this. I appreciate any advice as i am very limited with experience of ringnecks. Have you ever hand reared them, my son would like us to hand rear as we would like to have one for a pet in the house.

No, I have never hand fed my IRNs because it needs a lot of time and I am mainly interested in mutations (may be I will do it next year). If your IRN has laid an egg 4 weeks after arriving to your home and you have not seen the hen working the next, or the couple mating ... may be the hen was "pregnant" before arriving to your home. Is her actual male the one she was with before? Usually eggs arrive 3 at 4 weeks after beginning mating, but birds that have moved to another environement will not mate till they are adapted several weeks later.
If you want to hand-rear the babys there is a stikcy in this forum (the third one begining on the top of the page) by Mickaela and Donna with everything you should know.

Hi they have been together for 18 months, my son said he has seen the hen working the nest box. I have just come in from the garden and she has been in the nest box for at least 3 hours. The lady who we bought them from said if we put a nest box in the should go down so maybe she had seen them mating

Well It happened our first chick hatched I went to feed them on friday morning and there it was. I went in yesterday tea time and yes there was number 2. I am thrilled to bits, i have checked them and she is feeding them but i do not know if she is feeding them enough, I can see a small ball in the crop. They are pretty, the first egg was infertile, do i leave this in the nest box ?. What age shall i move them for hand feeding will this make them a better pet. thanks kaz

Hi thanks for your reply. Is it difficult to hand rear this is my first time and i can not find any one around my area to show me. i have read lots of articles and watched video clips but i am worried i have not seen it done. I have a brooder and spoons (bent), syringes, sterilizer, scales, food and books. I just wonder if i am doing the right thing.
Yes, you are doing the right thing: studing, learning and acting. Good luckyazzie wrote:Hi thanks for your reply.
