Blue's First Molt - And A Big Bonus!

Post by Poochletty »

I've had Blue since Dec 27th of last year. I was told he was 6-9 months old when I got him at the pet store.
He has been going through his first molt since I've owned him. It has been going on slowly for weeks. He looks so scruffy and has dropped so many big beautiful feathers, which I've kept in a zipper bag for sentimental reasons - Silly, huh?.
Anyway - he has been a little moody and bathes a lot. I made a "bathtub" for him out of a plastic microwavable bread pan. I drilled 2 holes in it close to the top and used 4 large washers and 2 screws and wingnuts to attach it to his cage like a perch attaches.
Here's the big bonus I am so excited about: Over the last few days I've gotten a very wonderful surprise. Blue's ring is appearing! Sure enough a black ring is appearing a bit more each day. It's so great! I wasn't expecting this because I thought he had to be much older for his ring to show up. Does this mean he's older that I thought? It doesn't change anything for me, but I'm curious. Anyway... my baby has a ring! YAY!

how sweet! Can't wait to see pictures! You mean Dec 2007? it's very possible the petshop may have simply been wrong about his age.

if he was 6 to 9 months in december last year, he is 16 to 19 months old... i would be pushing for the later age, they start colouring up anywhere between 1.5 years and 2.5 years depending on the bird.

Well not necessarily, Jordan started at 17 months (lutino) and kai at about 25 months so there is quite a range there, but for putting a definate age on your baby, i myself would wait until the full ring is in and dub him 2 years from there.

Thanks so much for the advice. I think calling him 2 yrs old at the full ring stage is a good idea. He's quite scruffy right now with his molt having him without most of his tail feathers. So, he was a bit indignant about having his picture taken. However, I told him that Skybaby and others wanted to see his starting ring, so he grumpily relented to the camera. The ring is just starting but you can see hints of it in the pictures. I feel like I did when my children got their first tooth. Here's my scruffy baby for you to see:

AWWW How cute!! Sky is looking like that too.. Only thing is.. I think my baby is younger than yours (assuming the pet store was correct). They thought he was 3 months when I got him in June of 08 which puts him at 6-7 months. Yet he's getting a greyish ring, too. We'll see. :D your baby is adorable!! Keep us posted!!
