Hello everyone brought my IRN home yesterday (he is hand reared) it took 8 hours to get there and back again never again i hope. Wel he seems to be settiling in. He's preening himself now as it happens. and he is play for you to come up to his cage talk to him. But the problem is as soon as you get your hand near him he just wants to get as far away as possible i can put my hand in and can get quite close but he then just jumps away i can sometimes get him onto my hand and my arm but he still just wants to get away. I want him to step up because he is full flight. We let him out yesterday and he just kept on trying to get away he won't even accept treats from hands. I kind of lost hope you can help me thanks guys he is now watching me with one foot tucked under and listening to the typing by cocking his head to one side lol

Maybe he needs a bit of time to settle into his new home and surroundings. :) Sounds like he has had a big day and could be a little stressed. :?

Is he an aviary or handraised bird?

Just take things slow and see if he accepts you over time.

Good luck :)

Hi guys thank you for your replies he/she is doing muych better today she's taking food from hand is a lot more comfortable on step up command and stays on me when taken out of the cage and is happy to sit on the playstand that i have brought her. The new thing she has started is today once we had taken in out and put her back in again a little while later she would lunge at the bars of her cage at whoever came near her she did it to three family members and me. They all flinched back. I on the other hand took a no nonsense approach placed my hand in the cage even though she was still threatening by opening her beak at my fingers and made her step up i then took her to the door of the cage and gave her kisses and she was fine. She did this again just now and i did the same as before i am just not sure if i am handling this behaviour in the correct manner i mean if it is a method of getting us to bring her to the front of the cage and receive kisses then i don't want to reinforce. Where as if it is a behaviour for telling us to stay away then i want to her to learn this is not the way to get her way or is it.

Sorry guys i know i write very long winded she is hand-reared this is my first IRN and i just don't want any bad behaviours to set in.

Hope you guys can help cheers

your doing exactly the right thing the quickest way to get her out of this habit of lunging and biting is to ingore it then when she stepped up you gave her the kisses so this is what she remembers from this lunging doesnt work on you & she gets no attention for it but if she steps up she gets lovley kisses
birds( like toddlers) crave attention and dont care whether is good or bad attention as long as you react & show your paying attention so if you dont react to "naughty stuff" but give them lots of attetion (&treats!!!) for the "good stuff" they very quickly learn
your doing well keep it up
