I want to figure out if my Indian ring neck is a girl or boy

Post by surferdon »

I have a blue form of a indian ring neck. The bird is almost 6 months old, and I was wondering if there is any way to tell at this stage the sex of the bird with out harming it. And also how do i post a picture so that way i can show you all?

hey there oh your ringneck looks like mine expect mines a little bit more electric blue! and mines only 7 weeks! ummm the only way you can know the sex of the bird at that age is by DNA testing a vet should be able to do it but i would know the price of it..... at about 1 year to 3 years if they get a dark ring around there neck their a boy! if it stays light its a girl!

im not to sure about the photo question yet! someelse might be able to help u with that one!

Hi! Some around here can tell if you give us a larger photo by the way a bird sits. Maybe posting a larger photo can get results. Most of the time we are right :D However, of course, there is nothing better than a DNA test so don't get so caught up on someone's take on your bird. Some females have been know to do very male things and vis versa...

Also I wanted to know that i noticed that my feathered friend tends to sneeze a lot when he/she is out of the cage. is this normal?

I think he looks like a boy because he's got skinny toes, not big fat sausages like all my girls do!

Ringnecks cannot be sexed visually until they are 2 years old.

im not sure but i am thinking its a female. Jeremy that’s not quite true is it??? you are a breeder so you must have a small incite on the traits of male and female behavior and various visual characteristics of a young bird.

According to beak placement, I would absolutely say female.

If you'll notice, males have much flatter beaks whereas girls have beaks that extend out much further.

This is my method of visually sexing and I havent been wrong yet, though Im sure one of the lil boogers will make a lie out of me eventually. HA!

I reckon we should run a book on the sexes!! Just like they do for babies before birth. That way we can find out who's method is more accurate - or who is a better guesser

i agree with mikaela, looking at the beak placement and shape i would say female, i also think your birds feet look fat compared to some of my birds feet.

nope. I don't even bother trying to visual sex Ringnecks as there is no accurate way of doing it.
Lovebirds on the other hand, i can sex visually when they are 5-6 months old

ok I was thinking it was a girl, but i guess we shall have to see because i wish not to pay 45 dollars just to know a fact.

Some say a bird talking is unnatural, but i think that it is cool. But since i have a female, probably, who is quiet all day and only makes calls in the morning which are far and few, Can i get my baby to mimic words. And How do I do so. thanks. :o
