Thinking about a holiday but what about Smokey

Post by laine »

Has anyone ever heard of or used a sitter for birds. I really want to go to Queensland in July but, of course, am worried about my boy (bird this is not son     ). Are there places like catteries and kennels where you can leave your fid or should I start trying to train a friend  and just pray they will do EXACTLY as I tell them. I don't want to leave him all alone as I am worried he will be too lonely. I intend to be away for about 5-7 days. Not that long, but I think is it too long for Smokey to be left? I have never left him since I got him just over 2 years ago.
If anyone knows of a place or a person close to me who can assist, I would be extremely grateful. I live in Caroline Springs, which is in western suburbs of Melbourne.
Any other helpful suggestions would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Pick a friend or family member that smokey is comfortable with and have them come over a few times before you leave and sit with him. I wouldn't take him to a place where thery board other birds. He will do just fine in his own home and someone he knows to come in and take care of him.

I have never used a bird sitter but, www.myparrotshop.com are in Melb and they do bird boarding. Not sure of how much they charge though. I'd hate to leave my birds with someone they dont know, but as long as they know what they are doing and its only for a short stay (a week) it should be fine. 5 -7 days is ok. I left Jibby for a year back in 04/05 .:( But he was in my familys care. (He knows them well).

Donna is right though, someone he knows and is comfortable with would be ideal. But if all else fails...
I'd love to help out!... But we live in the south east (peninsula), moving towards the Dandenong area soon within the next month (closer to partners work).. Jibby and Yoda would love to have a sleep over friend. haha. My partner is saying no we cant, but.. but.. but... if you don't find anyone before then, *shh* he is welcome here. 8)

i understand you laine because i am already thinking the summer holidays too :?
untill now ( i have irns for 20 yrs), but all of them are breeders, so i could leave them in their cages with enough food and water for few days ( 5-6) and everything was ok.
Now i have lazaros , a pet one, 10 months old now. he is very tame and i dont want to leave him alone for more than 1 day.
Every day when i come home, lazaros wait me to put him out of his cage to fly and play with me.I think lazaros regret so much if he stay alone in home.
I thought to bring someone home for few to check lazaros but i havent the appropriate, so i bought a travel cage ( from us, i pay double the cage)to bring him with me. It mustnt be so easy but i think is better than leave him alone.

Yes, l personnally in Mylo's 3 years have only ever left her for one night at a time. But l am a home boy anyway..lol..
It's like everyone mentioned if your boy know's someone great, but for 7 days he won't be stressed, for by the time he settles in you will be back .. :D
I have babysitted birds before so, if you haven't found nobody your welcome.I ask owner's to introduce the bird to my place before they go away to learn of there habits what not's, so when they stay they settle in easy.I live in the Bentleigh area :)

Thank you all so much. I was hoping someone was going to tell me of a great bird resort    I really didn't expect offers of help. I am ever so grateful. Be careful though, I might just take you up on the offer. :D
We want to fly to Queensland, so taking Smokey with us is just not an option. At least I am doing my research early otherwise we will have to settle on a local holiday and take him :D As much as my boyfriend, Brett, loves Smokey, I think he is hoping for a romantic getaway, just the two of us. Without a fid calling out :
Breeeeeeet hahahahahahaha. ( Smokey teases him terribly     )
