Why is my bird changing colour?

Post by Lila_ »

Hi guys

just a stupid question...
Dodo's beak was bright red when I first got her at 6 weeks (and yes I still fed her babymix etc till 12 wks) but now its turning black...
the bottom half and the edges of the top mandible are turning dark.
Btw she is green
My sister's lutino girl of the same age still has a bright red beak.

Dodo eats all her veges and is learning to eat her harrisons, but I have read somewhere that if feathers change colour its normally a vitamin deficiency. Is this normal?

Hi Lila,

I have a young Green IRN and her beak is also black like you described. So is her mothers. They are fed a range of fruit and veg along with seed. So I don't think you have anything to worry about :)

males in particular - beak goes dark red with black around the outside of upper mandible (if that applies to birds!!)
With girlies it stays light red with hint of black on upper mandible

hope helps..

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
