SO SAD.....SQUASHED BABY TIEL

Post by Sassi1320 »

I know this is a ringneck site and I appreciate that and I have nine of them, however, I am sure some of you have cockatiels so you could probably relate to my problem. My cockaiels had 2 babies on the 30th September and they are doing well. Then, another hatched 5 days later and it was so tiny in comparison. I was worried that the babies or the mother would squash it, but I thought, this must happen all the time and the mother would protect it. Well, it is now deceased and appeared to be
squashed.
IN HINDSIGHT, WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE!! I am so upset and feel I should have have pulled the older two and left the new guy with mummy??? There is still one egg to hatch, so please, if you have any advice, it would be well recieved. I'd hate a repeat.
Also, my finches just tossed out one dead baby (2 weeks old), then the next day, i found the other one dead still in the nest house. They were breathing the day before? What could have happened.
I'm not likin' this losing babies game, it is Soooo upsetting!

If youre up for it, I would take out the older two chicks from the 'tiels when the other egg hatches, and hand raise them. If the new one looks sickly, take it out too and look after it yourself. OR just take out the newly hatched one if you think its in danger.

With your finches, my husband used to breed them. Make sure the nest is clear of any mites or other nasties. It could just be the parents were new and didn't know how to care for them or somethin lacking in their diet that prevented the chicks growing properly. Process of elimination here.
