Hi!
Just wanted to say "hello!" to everyone. I am owned by a blue headed pionus, Braynon, a cockatiel named Kuari, a breeding pair of IRNs, I purchased in July and hoping they'll go to nest here in a few months, and a newly handfed IRN I just got yesterday. Oh, and some finches.
Looking forward to getting to know you and your birds!
Mary
Hello Mary,
Welcome to the board. I would love to join your IRN society that you posted the address for, but when I tried it wouldn't come up. So.. This board has been my life savior with my baby! Post pics if you can. Love to see everyone's babies! Lucky you have a horse. That's my next dream. Never thought I'd get my ringneck and I did. I've wanted a horse since I was 2 I think. Someday...
When I was 13 my dad told me he had not one, but two for me. When the horse float pulled up and backed into the paddock, two wild brumbies kicked their way out and took off at a million miles per hour My dad had rescued them from a cull on Stradbroke Island but they had never had human contact before. Talk about an experience. After about 18 months they would allow me to sit on their backs but that was all. No saddle was ever used on those two b*st*rds. To put a bridle on I had to have the bit inside a cream bun . They died of old age about 2 years ago. No more horses for me. Give me birds and dogs any day!
I guess I was lucky I had 2 horses they died about 3 years ago. At the moment we have 6 pet lambs, 1 cat, 5 goldfish, 2 Rats, 3 budgies my beautiful ringneck and 2 growing daugthers. Our dog has just died.
Sometimes my house feels like a nature reserve, all of my animals except my goldfish were saved animals from either the SPCA or through being told an animal needed a home, our little cat was found in a sack in the creek by our house and I just had to give her a home.
Hey Tasha,
I think people like us are angels to those animals. I too take in just about anything that needs help. I've got three dogs, three cats, and two birds. And then we feed two stray cats in the neighborhood-one of which had two litters of kittens-which I found them all homes and then we got her fixed. Someone has to help these poor creatures out! Some people are so mean to animals and it just tears my heart up! I would rather be around my animals than most people! No offense to anyone! But who REALLY loves us UNCONDITIONALLY! Our four legged, two legged, furry or feathery babies! And that's why I love them so! I'm done now, sorry I get going and don't know when to shut up.
My animals are mostly given to us because they are no longer loved by others. Most of them seem to become dysfunctional once they arrive at our place!! I have two cows at the moment who think they are dogs because they hang out with my dogs all day. I have a ram called Sparky who will knock you down to drink your beer (he skulls the best bottle of beer that I have seen anyone do. Thinking of taking him to the pub with me for the comps ). I have 17 sheep and 8 lambs and then of course all my birds. Oh, forgot to mention the chickens. It's a thing in our schools to teach kids about imprint behaviour. For this they give every kid a day old chicken to 'train'. At the end of the experiment (usually about 2 weeks to 1 month) they gas the chickens because most of the kids live in the suburbs and can't have chickens. We take them all in and have a massive chook run. Lots of eggs. I have deals going with the green grocer that in exchange for eggs, I get free fruit and veg for the birds and all of the offcuts from lettuces and all the rotten fruit and veg for the cows and sheep. Not bad.
It's great that you take in the chicks like that, you have managed to set up a really good deal with the grocer well done.
I was brought up on a dairy farm so I had every type of animal that was going normaly it was the one about to die and needed 24 hour care. I just couldn't imagine not having any animals.
I'm the same. I even rescued a kookaburra from the side of the road because the car in front hit it and kept driving. It bit the hell out of me and I had to take off my shirt to wrap it up to keep it still. I had to drive to the vets in just my bra and my shorts to get him fixed Anyway, he had a broken wing, got rehabilitated and I was allowed to assist in his release back into our area.
I have a big 'SUCKER' sign across my head when it comes to animals. All types. Except snakes. King brown bit one of my dog last year and he nearly died. Cost me $2,500 for the anti- venom and everyone told me to just put him down. Anyway, cutting a long story short, after lots of love and care, he is now 'super dog'.
Rescuing animals is fun! Especially after rehab is over. I've raised and released quite a few baby wildbirds (my favourite and first was Bubba the starling). And I help re-train the dogs my friends get from the SPCA or pound.
Our four big dogs were all SPCA or from peeps who didn't want them anymore. And four out of five of our birds were given to us (both IRNs were from clients, not all bad stories here). Our first rabbit was from a neighbor and lived to be nine; our second rabbit from the SPCA died at eight years of age.
If I could have a horse I would. But it's just not fair since the nearest stable is 20 mins away and we can't have on in our backyard, lol. City isn't friendly with livestock.
Animal peeps are the nicest (but sometimes the most critical) people you can know. Cause they care so much. ^^
I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
I'd have alot more animals if I had my own house tho. I'm glad I got such a nice house with all the birdies I have. Most houses are "NO PETS" and I think thats really sad.
Where is the love?
It makes me sad to hear about all the bad things that happens to animals. And I'm so glad there are people like us out there that care about them. I look at my little babies and they are just so defenceless how can you not want to protect them.
