Water bottle
Hello everyone, Wow it has been a long time, I just got done with another grueling semester of college, but I am pleased to say I was able to achieve a 4.0 semester which is great to see for me because I hate to put in a lot of work in something and not see results.
Ok to the point of this...
We recently just got hard wood floors refinished after being under carpet for years and years, however the point of re doing the floors is to sell the house. So My dad was going to make me get rid of my birds or keep them outside because of all the mess they make especially in their water dish. They always would put their food in the water and splash around so water would get everywhere. So I went to petsmart and found a all glass water bottle and let my birds play with it for a while to get the concept that water does come out. Now They have had the bottle instead of the dish for 2 months and it works great. No mess gets on the floor now, and I just shower with them daily to compensate for me taking away the dish and they seem to be doing fine. So I just wanted to post this and say that I recommend this idea and wanted to share it with you all. How is everyone I have missed our chats!!!!

Welcome back Surfer! Congradulations on your studies! Well done.
Thanx for the idea. I've really got to try and find a way to stop some of the mess as we are overdue for an inspection soon and we should be moving next march when our lease is up. I know a long way off yet but I'm forever fretting over what if we have an inspection soon.
My birds love bathtime though and I just empty the dirty water daily into my indoor plants as it saves water in these times of water shortages.
Look forward to hearing more of you and your birdies!

Good to hear from you and Congrats on the 4.0
wow thanks for the info on the bottles I had seen these bottles before and wondered if they would work or how to go about switching them over if I ever wanted to, good to hear it works.

Water bottles aren't natural for birds. Birds like to take baths and dunk stuff in their water. That's being a bird. There's also health risks when using bottles. Calcium build up and bacteria. Calcium builds up over a long period of time and even with washing the bottle every day will not keep calcium from building up. Some people think if they use a bottle and the water doesn't get dirty they only have to change it once a week or worse once a month. I just don't think water bottles are natural or safe for birds. Just my 2 cents.

yeah I hear that but if you are worried about bacteria think about how much gets in a dish if ur fid poops in the dish and is left there while you are at work, how much bacteria is then in ur water dish?? Also I shower my birds everymorning and they love that and get soaked!!!! but did not know about the calcium. how does that hurt a bird though????

Congrats on the 4.0--not easy to do. I don't remember where you are studying? Depending on how the floor is sealed, what the fids splash should not be a problem. I've got 30-odd in my living room with hardwood floors and it dries fast enough here to not be a problem (I'll tell your dad, but he probably won't believe me -- mine wouldn't!).

You arrange your food dishes so they won't poop in them. The calcium that builds up in the bottles is not good for parrots, It will also build up in the mechanisms of the tube and slow the flow of water. Bacteria will build up in the tube and the O ring. It's your call weather to use a bottle or dish I'm just telling you the cons of a water bottle.
Hey surferdon,
Welcome back and it has been a long time. It’s good to see you still have your ringnecks and are continually working with them.
About the water bottle. Water bottles are excellent because they do eliminate excessive water splashing—they are convenient too. I have seen several parrots that have been taught to drink from them. To avoid excess bacteria from growing inside the bottle, change the water regularly and add a few drops of apple cider vinegar. This should kill any harmful bacteria. Only one or two drops will suffice. (You should not be able to taste the vinegar and this should be done no more then twice weekly) This gives the ringnecks a few extra minerals as well—I add apple cider vinegar into my ringneck’s water before breeding season—works wonders in my opinion.
But as Donna said, you don’t want minerals developing on the spout of the bottle. To avoid this, make sure you soak the metal parts in vinegar to remove any mineral deposits. I would also recommend getting a bottle brush to wash the inside out.
Hope this helps,
Imran
