i have been reading posts and learning about my bird here for some time now. most of my guestions were usually asked by other members but im concerned now for my own bird. i like this site. its simple and user friendly. despite that i have to log in 3 or 4 times before i get on. anyone else have that issue?
he is 3 yrs old. he has only had one real bad molt. the kind where they look awful and spins are all over. i have noticed in the past week that a lot of feathers are coming out very fast. but now there are no spines.
im almost positive he is a boy. he use to have no ring at all and i wasnt sure. then i learned of the male dance and other behaviors and it made me realize he might be a male. i assumed he was female because i got him from a very reputatble breeder and he told me he thought he was a girl but no way to know for sure without a dna.
from what i have read here and other places he should have a ring by now. he should have had more molts by now. but i know he is 3 because he was still being hand fed when i brought him home.
The progress so far is he is real dark black under the beak. and if the light is right you can see some bluish/purple high on his neck. in any light he has red specks around his neck nearer to the back of his neck. 2 of them. he has been like this for months. now he is starting to have a massive amount of feathers in his play area yet he doesnt look like he is in a molt. no spins or anything.
could he be a girl? i mean i know he is 3. based on his progress can anyone tell me if they know of a male to ring this old and this odd? and if they do can you tell me how the process went?
thank you. i hope to make a lot of friends here (where are the guys) and im sure i will continue learning how to make my bird happy as possible. he gets a shower with me everyday and lately he has been loving it even more than usual. that is the only real sign besides the feathers that i see of a molt.
sorry for such a long post im just anxious and concerned all rolled into one. girl or boy i dont care but i do want to know! im a little shy so posting wasnt easy. i wanted to post a week ago but didnt know how or where to jump in.

Hello Alex welcome to the board!!
Your bird will have a hard molt once a year and maybe small ones in between. Sounds to me like you have a boy just by the way you described his ring coming in. I also have a male that's almost 3 and still not a full ring but you can tell it's getting darker. I'm 99% sure you have a boy. Post a pic it might help us decide. Don't be shy of posting any questions we are glad to help all we can.

Welcome to the family Alex .. my babies all got their rings relatively early, but I do know that the general time is between 2-3 years so I would say, like donna does, you probably have a boy, especially with the red spots you describe around the back of the neck.
As donna said, post as much as you like, every question you have is very important, as we are all here to help each other learn as much as we can about these babies. And again as Donna said, posting a pic would be an amazing help for us, to be able to help you and put your mind at ease.

Hi Alex, I have the same problem.
Hi Alex. At 3 years old he should have a ring coming through. But it does sound like you have a boy there! We'd love to see some pics.
Look forward to getting to know your lil guy! As Donna said, dont be shy. We love to help.
I find if I 'login to check msgs' I have no problems signing in.
