Is it Springtime

Post by Rosemary »

Each time I go to pat or get my IRN to step onto my arm (he or she) squats down and goes all clucky, I was wondering if it is because it is now Springtime in New Zealand, and can someone tell me is it a male or female that does this.
Also it just loves on my shoulder, but I find that all the little droppings she deposits on my clothes stain, so apart from wearing some sort of cape or something, are there any suggestions that other people do to stop this.
I find this forum so interesting, I learn such a lot from it. Many thanks,
Rosemary

 It is a girl thing. Give her a little rubbing under her neck and you'll have a friend for life.

You mean like this?

Rosemary - I am in Australia. My irn did the clucky thing when we first got her in January when she was (apparently) 3 months old. She started the biting etc about a month or two after and stopped the clucky thing altogether. Anyway I had to take her to the vet for a blood test a couple of weeks ago (she has psittacosis) and she screamed like I have never heard her scream before - I nearly cried! Well, when I got her home she started the clucky thing again and I put it down to her having such a traumatic experience - I was traumatised!!! I am the only person she does it to - everyone else she lunges at and bites!

Anyway, when I was at the vet getting her needle a couple of days ago (she's on a 6 week course) the nurse said that it's coming into breeding season and that's why she's doing it. BUT - and this is the interesting part - she also said that boys do it in breeding season as well! The boys go up to the girls doing the clucky thing and if the girls does it back - well, you know the rest...This I found very interesting because I was also under the impression that only girls did it. You learn something new about these birds everyday I tell you!

Have laundry piling up from four human teenagers and a husband... you'd re-think the poop smock. Or maybe poo doesnt bother some of us as much as it does others. I know I dont want it on me, thereby changing my shirt 10-15 times a day. I have enough laundry. Crazy, perhaps. Realistic considering my circumstances, absolutely. Cute, as the day is long!

 Hello again, many thanks to all who have answered my letter, well it could be a boy or girl, I will have to wait and see now that both boys and girls do the clucking thing. Bobby is so friendly to me, not so my husband, but it does not bite, not intentionally anyway, cuddles up under my chin or on my shoulder and would stay there for hours if I would let it. We have been putting the cage outside on these lovely spring days, now it is mimiking all the other little wild birds, so I hope that will not put he or she off talking. Now 10 months old. I was hoping for a boy, because I like the black ring around their necks. He is blue. The bird that has psittacosis what were the symptoms of that, and is it harmful to humans, Bobby always gives me kisses etc and loves to get into my cup of tea that I am drinking, would that be harmful?? also has a peck at my dinner when gets the chance.

there’s nothing wrong with poop shirts as mikeala puts I also have one for home use. But I can tell when zazu wants to go he gets all agitated and sometimes flies off but there are still accidents. And when I go out I use a small peace of cloth at about 24inches long and 6 inches wide. He usually sits on the shoulder with the cloth on it but tends to move around now and then. But im getting good at knowing when he needs to go.

:) Thanks for that hint, I think the 6" piece of cloth is a great idea, I will get on to that myself. Yes I can usually tell when Bobby wants to go as well, usually gives a little wiggle before hand. ha ha.
Can you tell me how to put photographs on the site, I cannot see how or where to post them.

Would the person from Australia get back to me re psittacosis, I just wonder if I should let Bobby drink from my cup and have a peck at my dinner etc. with all that bird flu last year, I read that Parrots and pigeons carry it as well as chickens, and I often give him a kiss on the beak?
Would love to hear from you again. Regards, Rosemary
