Have any of us tried this?

Post by Mikaela »

Baby is being mean. He doesnt want to step up without it being major drama rather than him normally leaping onto my finger.

Once on me, I cant get him to step off without the equal amount of drama.

He is trying me, bluffing, being a **** head. Hes my best friend and I miss his normal self.

My question is:

During bluffing, have any of you tried to step things down to basic step up training all over again to try to break them through this period? As to remind them to do as told when commanded to step up... not nogotiate with us?

Im considering this technigue, would like feedback. :(

Want my boy back...

Mik This little bout your having with Baby is just his first mature hormonal phase. It last about three months then he'll be back to normal. You might want to shorten his day light hours because longer days stimulates sexuality. Try not to work with the training sessions also, this just pisses them off more. I found if I just ignore this behavior and not play with Tango or have any kind of interaction he calms down quicker.

Good question.

I havnt found anything that stops the 'birdy pms' yet. Gilbert can be difficult sometimes.. If he wants to bite he will bite! I'll walk out of the room for 15 mins (he hates me leaving the room) or lock him in his cage. Come back and try some step ups. Its a hormonal rollercoaster with him. Other times he'll wake up on the 'good side' of the perch.

Sometimes I just wanna give em a BIG squishie cuddle when they are mean and evil. But birds dont like that sorta thing! :(

Just let Baby get through this and keep persistant. 2 things an IRNs owner needs.. Persistance and Patience.

With dude I would tell him what I was gonna do first. At first he would bite me, but not super hard, I would bleed but it would hurt. I just didnt let him bluff, I gave no reaction to the bites, and praised him when he did step up. At this point, he would bite me as he would step up, so I would put him back down and say no, but I would drag out the word not shout it and say noooo; he just seemed to pay more attention to what I was saying if I said it this way, and repeat the step up process until he did it with out using his beak. When He did I praised him and gave him a bit of vanilla yogurt, its his favorite!!! Now he steps up fine but if he ever forgets I just start at square one.

I want my Baby back!

Well, I have another technique I use but its manipulative.

If I step Peaches up first, Baby leaps to my finger, never wanting to be apart from her.

So use this to my advantage through this time and not feel a bit bad although it is manipulative?

Surfer, Your brave taking bites! Ive trained myself not to scream 'OUCH!' instead without a thought I pick him up and put him in his cage. Walk away, he screams for me to open the door, I ignore it. Am I too hard on him?

Hehe. Mik, I use Gilberts bell the same way. Where ever his bell goes he goes. But I still dont use it all the time. I use it when Im in a hurry. He still needs to learn to step up when I tell him to! They still need to learn to do what they are told.

Tango plucked his self because he was going through his first hormonal phase. Tango went every where with me but the vet said since he turned mature he wanted me for a mate and not his mommy. His testicals were enlarged pressing on all his other organs and it was driving him nuts. The vet advised me to let him be and not interact with him till this goes away. Here are some pic of my little sexualy frustated man.

Baby is frustrated as well and has even tried to 'do' Peaches.

I have had to separate them.

He was standing on her tail, pinning her down, getting ready to do the nasty to my poor little tiel.

 Poor Peaches! She must of been very confused. Lucky you didnt get lil green ringnecked tiels with crests! Who would of thought a tiel and an IRN could be so in love.

 Poor Tango! Must be painful for the poor fella. I hope he got some relief.

I was upset. Baby was upset and wild acting. Peaches was fighting with all she had. She bleed so I dont know what exactly happened but it changed their relationship to nothing.

Now, Peaches is coming around to forgiveness but let me tell you she took a few months. Baby would get right in her face kissing her and she literally could seem to not even notice.

Looked right past him. Baby wanted her back sooo bad and seems to have won in the end.
