Hello all, great site!!
Great to find a site for the Indian ring neck babies!!! I know i am a newbie but i was hoping i could ask some help right off the bat!?...
I have a new IRN, unfortunately he is not in good shape. Long story short i was driving to a friends house last week and at a stop sign in her neighborhood i heard this terrible screech (being a bird lover i knew it was not a wild bird ). I looked and saw a tiny white cage outside in the yard of a house. Inside was a scared to death IRN! by the way it was about 32 degrees out!! So i promptly pulled in the drive way. When i knocked on the door and asked about the bird, the lady said "i hate that thing i was about to let it go" ........well I now have a scared IRN with no tale feathers and a upset sun conure (my baby, she likes to be an only child). So any way any advice to help this baby along to a new healthy life would be great!!!
Just a little info on him....He seems to have been at least some what tame before. He will sit on your shoulder after much screaming and flapping... I found this out when i had to clean his "cage" nasty!!! I have tried to let him be for the most part just until he is settled a little. I have not put him in a bigger cage yet because he is so traumatized but i plan too tomorrow. When you get close him he chirps and runs to the other side of the cage holds on with just his beak and holds his feet inclose to his stomach....I have been around birds all my life and have never seen this behavior out side of play, any thoughts?? well thanks and hope to here from everyone soon!! Sorry for the long post.

Good for you
What a great thing you did.
Just feed him good food and plenty of it and talk soft and kindly to him for a day or two. See if he comes around. There's lots of experience here and use the search option to look up behavior and taming threads. Just wanted to commend you for your good deed. I'll leave the rest to the experts.

The poor bird, it's fortunate you came along when you did. You didn't mention quarantine so I'm not sure if you are, but it would be a good idea to keep the IRN separate from your conure for a minimum of two months. Separate rooms at least, if your place is small.
He sounds very scared, as if he thinks you're going to thwap the cage when you come near. Who knows what kind of care a woman who 'hates that bird' gave him. He'll probably only eat seed for now so you may want to get him on a pelleted diet and offer veggies- he probably won't know what those are either. A cooked sweet potato mash with lots of diced fresh veggies served warm might tempt him if offered in his 'food' dish. Sprinkle seed on top- best given in the morning when birds break their nightime fast. Our babies are introduced to fresh foods this way. Warm food for birds seems to be comforting, if they'll eat it.
As far as taming, I would also wait until he's settled into his new cage. I think I would begin taming a few days after he begins playing with toys. That's usually a good sign they're settling in and opening their minds to new things. I'm only guessing that he had few or no toys in his cage when you found him. Maybe a shredder toy he can work out some frustration on too.
If he's a sunflower seed lover, I would reserve those as treats from you. If he runs even when you have a sunflower seed, just let him see you drop it in his dish and walk off. Eventually he should take it from you through the cage bars. That will be great progress, so he's always getting something good from you. And when you aproach he lives through it and no harm comes.
So, those are my thoughts at this moment and I'm sure you'll find a lot of info in other threads. Welcome to the board, bird lover!

How can anyone treat a bird or any animal like that? How hard would it have been for this sick person to just pick up the phone and call a pet store or animal control to come pick it up!To be exact,We call animal control all the time since we must have Catnip growing somewhere in our yard.Every stray cat that comes along in my neighborhood makes a bee line straight for us and takes up home here.No matter what.
What a great thing you did. I know how you felt. We got Milo from a run down pet shop in Bahrain. The cages were all sitting at the side of a very dusty and noisy road in 45 degree heat. We've had him a few months and he still panics when anyone goes near him but he comes out of his cage every day and stands on the back of the sofa looking out of the window. He'll eat and preen outside his cage and every day we get a little bit further. Good luck wth your little guy
