Just got my first IRN

Post by Johnny »

I just got a 7 month old yesterday. I think he's doing great. Squeaking a lot, eating good, made the little beak grinding noises at bedtime etc.
He's scared of my hands, but he did climb on my forearm and didn't bite.

Can someone recommend some good treats? I want to give him a little reward while I work on taming him. I think he likes fruit, the first thing I saw him eat was a dehydrated banana chip.

Welcome aboard, you're gonna love your new little buddy.

Try small pieces of grapes, mine love them. Also try sunflower seeds. They seem to like those a lot.

We love new members to chat with and we love pics and the whole story
Where did you get him, what's his name etc etc.

I went to a bird show with lots of breeders. I didn't have a certain breed in mind, just wanted a smaller bird that was quieter than the Patagonian Conure I was forced to get rid of years ago. I saw this little 7 month old IRN in a cage with 3 siblings. He came up to the very front of the cage, looked me in the eyes and went squeak squeak! I looked at all te other birds, came back to the IRN and he did the same thing again. So I bought him for $150, got him a huge new cage, toys and food. We're on day 2 and doing good. He is a little scared of my hands, I think it might be because his wings look very clipped.
He sat on my hand for awhile today, and did not try to bite me even once. I love him, he's so sweet. He squeaks a lot.

I'm sorry I didn't write more. My name is Johnny. I'm a bachelor and live alone in Portland, Oregon.
I went to a bird show last weekend. I looked at all the babies for sale. I saw this cute, adorable little ringneck. He was on the front of his cage making peep noises at me. I walked by again later, and he did the same thing. I had to have him.
I've had him 4 days now, and he's the sweetest little thing I ever saw. He's eating good. He's still very timid, but he beak grids at night at bedtime. He hasn't bit me even once, and he's a very good eater. I think he kind of likes me.
I named him mouse because he's tiny, cute, very quiet, but sometimes makes little squeaks!
I can't want to spend lots of years with him.
Oh, and he's a light powder blue color. My camera doesn't work well or I'd have pics.

Congratulations on your new baby! My Magellan is blue too. At the moment, her favorite treat is Wheat Thins that she stole from Mom; close runners up are baby carrots and broccoli (that doesn't look like it is spelled right, but you get my drift....and House is about to come on!). Dried figs are lots of fun too.... we can throw them in the water bowl, add a few crackers and peppers, and it we time it just right and it is a hot day, we are close to having moonshine by the time everyone gets home from work. Life is nothing if not an adventure. Enjoy!!

Oh, and thank you for mentioning the diet tips! I need to find some treats that Mouse can't resist. I know part of taming him will have to be offering treats to him by hand that he can't resit!

OK Moonshine, that's a good one, so everyone listen up, if your bird is talking clearly in the am and you come home at 5 and he's slurring his words, check the water dish straight away.

treats to try

Post by Peanut »

My IRN's favorit foods are peanuts and apples. He just goes nuts over them! He alos likes dried bananas. I've tried starfruit, mango, and kiwi, But he doesn't seem to like them as well. I would definatley try apples or peanuts! Unsalted peanuts of corse though!
