Cage Latch problems

I hope you can make out this latch. Nila has a fun time playing all over the cage and he slides down the door and got his foot caught twice in the door latch. He screamed his head off and it really hurt him. I'm hoping it won't swell too much by morning. I'm not sure if the cage was put together wrong or if the latch the arm swings into should have the opening up. That's how it was when I got it. After tonight I removed them and turned them upside down, there are two doors with the same latch.
Anybody else have any problems. I never thought about it. If I hadn't been here he could have hung there for a long time.
And I do run out and let they out playing on top of the cage.
Another reason you see people post about "the rules" or it sounds like that, but I know why. You always read not to leave them out and alone, to supervise them and this is why. If something happens and you're not there they could die.
Anybody know about these latches, should I try and replace them with something more safe?

cage latch

Yep, Sue, I have read about this VERY same problem on some other boards involving cockatiels, and CAGS. This is a very common problem...I have read something about how it needed to remain in the up position or something like that..I will research some past post and see what I can find...Also there is one type of cage with a latch that was made with bad zinc containing metals and the bird had metal toxicity.. It was brass looking with a rabbit symbol stamped on it...Watch those cages folks.
