picking feathers

Post by selma »

Hope someone can help me on this one. What exactly is feather picking? Our birdie preens himself everyday and it takes him about an hour if not more. When he's finished there's quite a bit of those tiny white feathers around. Sometimes a couple of little green ones too. Is that feather picking? I do mist him every other day with warm water mixed with a few drops of apple cider vinegar. A few times we gave him a bath but he was so distressed so we stopped that.
Any ideas what the problem could be? Should we go back to giving him a bath?

Your IRN may be just molting. When they're shedding their old feathers and growing new they'll preen more and you'll notice more feathers around.

Most feather pickers will have bald spots, or be totally bare except for the head. A beginning picker will normally have balding areas under their wings, at the base of the tail, or on their tummy. Some birds only feather pick the down or the top feathers but others will pick them all out.

It sounds like your IRN is just molting. :)

Thanks for your reply melika. I think you're right about the molting because he has also lost two tail feathers in the last month. I will try not to be so worried anymore. thanks again
