Kim and anyone whos tried the receipe kitchen sink from BB site

did they like it??? I'm tempted to make a batch but Its a lot of food if hes not going to eat it.

Hi Ducky:

My birds (except Big Bird) love it! They also REALLY like the birdy bread!!

Well, I kind of made up my own bird bread, based on what was in the veggie bin at home. Happy to share details if anyone wants something more specific. Stuck with the kitchen sink concept though...if it is good for them and I had it, it went in the bread!

Also-big bird not liking something doesn't mean much. He dislikes most fresh foods. Loves his Harrisons. I am trying to get him to "branch out"

I usually spend 2 Sat. a month cooking up enough for two weeks worth and freezing it. It works out for them...

So how have you been Ducky? Hows the fid?

And the birdie bread recipe you use please.

I made birdie bread using jiffy mix and hung a whole muffin on the skewer for Nila and Priya and they stood one on each side of it and tried to gobble more than the other one and Nila actually vomited he ate so much. We had a shower just after and he was hanging up side down on the perch and vomited. Poor little bugger but serves him right for being so greedy. He tries to take the food out of Priya's mouth all the time. I used soy milk and wondered if that had anything to do with it? Is soy milk a no no for birds?

Sue- I used 2 boxes of jiffy corn muffin mix, added 3 eggs (and the shells), instead of milk, i used a homemade veggie broth (tom, water, green beans, fresh spinich, carrots, water) and olive oil. In food processor diced fresh green beans, fresh spinich, carrots, zucchinnie, yellow squash, tomatoes, a handful of fresh peppers, fresh corn cut off the cob. The little things I used a handful, the big things, I used one large veg. oh, also threw in a big handful of flax seed and another of steel cut oats.

wiped the inside of a glass cake pan with olive oil, baked at 400 for about 30 mins. Looks like a dense cake....

The other thing I make fairly often is a sweet potatoe thing....cooked sp, add chopped apple and steel cut oats with about 1/2 c of water, microwave a minute, mush apples and oats into sp, sometimes I add banana too (after I cook it). I freeze portion sizes of everything so I don't have to deal with cooking every day and they still get good stuff.

If something seems off, let me know...going off the top of my head here.

I have seen the kitchen sink recipe and it does look like a lot, so if I do something close to that I will just make it in smaller quantities - that way if they don't like it then I won't have wasted so much.
Not that my guys are picky - they like food. :wink:

Does anybody else's ringies really like fruit? I have noticed that most of my guys really have a thing for the dried fruit in any of the blends I give them.

I tell you I wish I could find something somewhere of the different fruits and seeds etc that are indigenous to India - that way I could try to give them what they would have in their own country.

The fruit I get is for birds so it does not have all the sugar in it like the stuff you would get in the grocery store.

Let me rephrase - it isn't dried with all the sugar like so many of the dried fruit in the grocery stores.

do you know if they soak it to remove the sugars? I would be interested to know how it is processed. most of the sugars in dried fruit occur naturally and concentrate as a reult of the reduced mass....less fruit (bulk) due to removal of water, same qty of sugar as in the whole fresh fruit.

Is the dried fruit for birds available through a regular pet store?

Same reason for me. It's like fruit juice, full of sugar. But at least with the dried fruit you're getting the good parts too, instead of just juice.

I feed fruits in moderation. They have good stuff in them but the sugar keeps me from feeding too much.

Sorry I haven't been on in a while. This cold or whatever is kicking my butt!

I don't know how they do the fruit, but it does not have the sugary stuff on it or showing like some I have seen.

My guys don't get it all the time, but I have notived that even in their food mix - they will always pull out the fruit first.

Here is a website where I get some of the fruit and veggie mix from. I haven't gotten it online as I have been able to get it in person so far from bird shows.

well I made a small batch of the kitchen sink stuff, ducky was his usual little brat and picked through it and then picked the bowl outta the holder and tossed it out of the cage door. I dished some up for the parakeets, and they grubbed so ducky went back later and I did see him eating some. I also tricked him this week with his pellets he wont eat them either but i coated them in peanut butter and he ate them this time.
