All About Babies ^_^

Post by frikkus »

Howdy.

Three days ago I obtained a five week old lutino ringneck. I have been feeding as needed, and spending three fifteen minute periods a day with him in my hands/lap. Whilst I was a little surprised at his behaviour, I was not overly worried until this morning, when my partner brought home his own 4 week old lutino ringneck. My partners bird has only the beginnings of pin feathers, whilst my boy is well on his way to being fully feathered.
The issue as such, is behaviour. My boy cowers instantly at the mere sight of anything moving. When spending time with me, he buries his head in terror and shakes the entire time. He also seems to have great trouble walking and even standing confidantly.
In comparison, my partners new bird stands and walks with no problems, and is bright and alert and already curious about things. That being said, both birds eat like pigs.

We are both brand new to the Ringneck 'experience', and as such, I'm just wondering if this is perfectly normal differing rates of developement... or something perhaps indicative of a potential problem.

Sorry to drag on so much ... Just wanted to provide all possible information.

cheers

Frik.

*cringes* You bought the babies unweaned? Oh boy...please be careful about what you are doing. There are so many things that can go wrong and no one here really has the experience to tell you want to do (most of us here are 'new' owners...I've only had my Prinny for a year and some months now)

Mik, I'm going to recommend that she go to http://www.birdboard.com there she can get the BEST info on what she ought to be doing...I'm sorry I don't mean to peddle other boards but here she can't get what she needs.

heya ^_^ thanks for the heads up.

I realised from the beginning that things would be tricky with unweaned birds, but it couldn't be helped. An aquaintance of mine keeps many ringnecks, and she recently had her avairies vandalised and lost many of her birds, leaving her suddenly with 30+ babies to hand-feed. Obviously this is quite impossible for her what with family and work commitments.
Seeing as I'm home all day, I though I'd try and help out.

Thanks much for the help ^_^

Oh I don't mean to critize! Sorry if I can out that way  but I really don't approve of breeder selling unweaned chicks. In your case, it was an act of need for those babies to survive. I understand.

Give birdboard a try and ask questions there...
