ringneck nesting

hi, i have a pair and the female just sits in the nesting box all day, but there are no eggs, i put some branches in and she chewed them all up to use as nesting material so would that mean she's in the mood and will soon lay? last year she had fertilised eggs but they died in the shell.

Try putting aspen shaving in the nest box. And keep your humidity level to around 75 to 80% in your breeding room. This will help the eggs during development and hatching. Donna

Try just plain sawdust from a sawmill or local hardware store if they have a cutting section. You need a good 3 to 4 inches approximately 100ml. The hen will do the rest. The eggs need to sit stable and not move around. I've been using sawdust for more than 10years with not one problem. You can also change it after the chicks break feathers with no dramas at all. Hope this helps.

ohh sorry, i dont only have the branches, i have about 3 inces of shavings aswell, but i dont know what the problem is? and like i said, she did have eggs last season

Hi Jay Did your hen lay this time last year? My ringnecks usually start working the nest box about 3 to 4 weeks before they lay. Just give her time if she laid last year she will probably lay this year too.
Donna P.S I just perfer to use aspen shavings in my nest boxes because it has no oder I would not use sawdust because I wouldn't want my babies inhaling the dust. It's just my perference.

I was generalising when I said sawdust I meant shavings as you guys call it, not the really fine dust, just to clear things. Sorry for the mix up.
