Well, as ya'll know, Baby is my best friend. I love him dearly and unconditionally. My problem is, I have only felt of his beak and feet.

Since hand feeding, he would not let me touch him then either. He would stop eating and just attack. So, to get his food down him, I would just leave him be.

I wish I could rub him, as many of you wish your bird spoke a huge vocabulary. Reckon we get what we get.

He is 1.5 yrs old and hasnt gotten the slightest bit better. HE HATES TOUCH WITH A PASSION! It like he has been violated and boy will he bite you. :cry:

If he wont allow touch by now... realistically, he may never. True or False? I mean, he really hates it.

oh man, Mik ... i have that issue with Wills, but u know his story ... k, i'm gonna admit sumpin ... i've taken to coverin him with a towel or a shirt or sumpin just to hold him near me ... know wut?? he's over it just as soon as i put him back on his perch or cage or wutever ... if this is wrong, then DAMN me & delete this, but it works FOR US!! somehow, i MUST have him trust me & this is working FOR US ... he won't go to anyone else, but he'll step up to me & he talks ... STEP UUUUP, GOOD BOY, GOOD PARRRROTT, errrrrr, PURRTY PARRRRROT ... remember, he wuz WILD when he came to us in january ... this is only 8 months later ... i STILL believe, tho, that competition has alot to do with his progress ... he loves me, but ain't sure if he wants me to know it ... 'TIL he sees me interacting with Max (and Gina before) or even interacting with Johnny or the rest of the creatures ... he doesn't resent it, he just wants some ... just like a guy!! hmph!!

k, then ... just my $.02!!

ps - i don't do this every day, but i DO handle him every day. i snuggle him prolly about once a week ... fer now!!

Mik I have been having the same issue w/lou...he lets me touch his beak, and is SLOWLY letting pet the top of his head for "lovins" he will not let me touch him anywhere else...

I guess I am counting my blessings with my Prin. She lets me touch her all over...I guess that is the difference between my girl's breeder and so many others. Mine had her and her children touching and handling the birds.

I feel so lucky I had no idea you guys had suck non snuggly birds. George is very sweet in the mornings, sometimes I think he is a too in disguise he gets that snuggly in the mornings. In the afternoon and evening he is not so cuddly I can touch him but he wiggles out of my hand preferring to perch on them instead of rap up in them. Although if I am watching a movie he will sit on my shoulder and sometimes slowly make his way under my chin still cant cuddle him but can rub his head for hours like that. I once watched a 3 hour movie with him under my chin the entire time.

I'm new to the forum. I just got my first bird, an IRN I have named Logan, a little over 2 weeks ago. I bought him from a store where the owner hand feeds every bird herself. Logan is about 7 months old now, and he's very sweet. She had him trained to step up, and he likes to play with both my husband and me. The book she uses is "Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot." I bought it, and so far, I'm really liking it. If you try some of the methods in that book, your bird should learn to trust you.

I handle him at least twice a day, sometimes a little more.

I won't know for sure if Logan is male for about another year, but he was born with 2 albinos, which I am told are always female. So we have a strong suspicion that we have a male. He's blue, and so are the parents.

Jordan was handraised, after a while at home, even though we handled him alot, he started to not like to be petted, I simply then forced the issue. He would wiggle and squirm and try to get away, hated ! it ! .. but I kept on huggin and cuddling and petting him, especially petting him when he was sleepy and fluffed up. Just gently tickling the fluffed up feathers. In short I forced my affection on him. Now he just adores it. He got over it, got use to it and actually learnt to trust us and love it, even command it.

They don't know what human affection is.. they don't know what you are doing, if you are going to hurt them, so you have to teach them what it is, once they become familiar with it (because after all it is unatural to them) they will trust it and accept it. Like anything new to them.

Sometimes you just have to force an issue. Just like you do when you make them stepup.

wow i kind of feel a little lucky .. eventhough i am dealing with Jayjay being rebellious lately i must admit i have always had an affectionate parrot. When we are just sitting there his little beak is always touching my chin and he looooves a scratch. I may have a snuggling parrot but he does not talk. So i am envious of those who have talking parrots .. guess we cant have everything!!

My lil one tries to attack me too. I found out a way to trick him into letting me pet him though.. I dunno if it'll work with all birds but it worked for me lol. He picked up a cap off a water bottle and REFUSED to let it go.... lol Well I took advantage of the situtation and while his beak was preoccupied I pet him all I wanted

I also notice that after a nice warm bath he's a lil more laid back then usual.

Awww, don’t worry. Archimedes used to be like that now he is such a snuggle bug. I can hold him any which way and he could care less. Believe me he has his moments, but again, they all have their own personalities. Just continue to be there and one day he’ll surprise you. Ringnecks are very pristine parrots, they thrive to be the most beautiful parrots known to man. :wink:

Yes, they are very vain, to say the least. So that lil *Bleeper* doesnt want his mamas ol dirty hands on him messing up his ever so perfect feathers, huh?

Thats it! Im not going to be the push-over mama a day longer, bird or kids! I am going to do as angie said and touch him when he is sleepy and handling him ALOT rougher.

He sits on my finger like I am dangling china... not no more, he is going to get a good head ruffling up each day. He needs to learn to respect me like he does my husband.

Hubby is rougher and more stern and Baby NEVER tries him. Like, Baby steps onto my finger. He uses the swoop method. His method is better but I like to have Baby jump onto my hand.

Keep in mind, he never interacts with him unless he is hungry or in danger and Im not within hollering distance. He will then tend to him. I have caught him talking baby talk 'why you love your mama so much pretty boy, cant pace the house looking for her, she'll be right back Baby boy. Stop being such a 'p' word. You know you arent allowed floor time unless your mama is sitting with you'.

I think he may feel silly to coo over animals because I 'catch' him doing it. Then he is like what? Screw that bird I was just getting his **** off the floor.

So all this time I have wanted love he has been like 'dude, the hair' ! I'll make him think hair!

LoL!!! Mikaela you have to handle them like you would any other bird. My Archimedes and Regan will let me touch their feathers any which way. I love it because when I touch Archimedes's tail, he makes this growling irritated sound, kinda like don’t touch me…but I ignore it and he gets over it. Try to push his boundaries and believe me he’ll get used to it. I know mine did.

My new baby is teaching me how birdies like to be touched! God and Kim blessed me with such a loving Quaker.

We are both in love. She is more like a sugar-glider... wants to be against me and I can touch her anywhere and she loves it!

Well it might force baby to compete for your affection now. I know Archimedes will not stand for me to touch Brutus or Regan. If he catches me he lets me know with a bite, then he talks to me and jumps in my lap for a snuggle session. I swear, they let you know who owns who! My African Grey is pretty cool, could care less and will go to anyone. What a ham! :wink:

Tsume, my sister's IRN is still resistant to touch as well. Though he has been improving since I told her how I taught Hane to accept tough. I can now scratch Hane's head- and he likes it. We're working on other parts of the body, though he doesn't bite me if I try.

I started with beak touching, just with my finger. For weeks that was all I could do with Hane. Then we moved to head touching, just above the beak where his nares are. Again, it took weeks. I eventually worked my way to the back of his head, then after a good while to scratching. It took a bit longer for him to LIKE it, lol. But now he does. So far, Tsume is on the beak touching part.

Whenever he reaches for your finger, pull just enought away and try again. Eventually they just stop trying to bite and give in. The trick is not to push it to the next level too soon.

Anyway, that's what has worked for me so far. Though I don't know how severely your Baby reacts. I hope it can help, at least a little.
