Hi everyone. I am the proud new owner of a little green IRN as yet un-named. Ive had parakeet envy for a while, and since my cat had to move back to my mums house - cause I ive in an apartment - I thought it was the perfect opportunity to get myself acquainted with the exotic looking breed.

My bird is still a baby, he/she has only a a cute little tail at the moment. The people in the pet shop said that he/she was too young to identify the sex. If anyone knows how to check early please let me know.

I want to know so that I can get he/she a mate. Please also advise of the best colour to get so that their babies have the most varied colours.

You'll be hearing a lot more of me in the future......Cherie :)

Yes, you can have your bird DNA'ed. Its very cheap... 20 bucks?

Downside is, you have to pull feathers.

Most of us wait but I waited on the sex of my unborn child too. I understand wanting to know.

Google bird DNA. Let us know if you decide to do it :!:

Hello

Post by Bird crazy »

Welcome the the board and to being owned by an IRN.
I always like to hear the name but now I also want to know why or how you selected the name, is it a character trait, one you hope they'll be able to say easily, just a favorite name.

We have people from all over the world posting to this site. Our birds bring us together. It's great. I've noticed some cultural differences in wing clipping, and I wonder if names are culturally different too.

I don't know anything about breeding these birds, but I wonder if they need a large flight cage in order to be successful at breeding. You might want to explore that since you live in an apt.

Personally *I* would only breed in an aviary as to give each partner their own space but Im not a breeder.

You know your birds. How they interact, get along. I say aviary IMHO.

My new birdie Sohan

Post by theautumnchild »

Hi again guys,

Iv named my new bird Sohan, it is an indian name, though I cant remember what it means.

Meet Sohan...

Im leaning a heap about them, dropping in to different pet shops asking lots of questions.

What I have discovered:
He is about 1 year (green ring band with APS A11),
He hasnt got a tail because it was pulled out (I originally thought it was was because he was very young, which hes not),
He is most likely a boy, though i havent had him DNA tested yet - Please let me know what you think,
He is very smart,
Dispite being somewhat fierce at the mo I know hes soft underneath
(I'm in the process of taming him)
His favourite thing is to put food in his water dish!

I currently have him in a cockatoo cage but have purchased a large cage which I am getting in the next day or two (I'll post pics of Sohans when hes in his new cage).

Im a bit concerned about his feathers - he doesnt look the healthiest in the pic above.

He's gorgeous. Give him a good healthy diet, lots of love and attention and if possible get him to a vet for a check up so they can draw blood and see if anything is wrong. But mostly good diet, lots of love and stimulating play and toys and he'll be great I'm sure. He looks good to me in the pic. I don't see anytning I would be worried about. But hey I'm new to owning an IRN too.
