New friend for Baby

Post by xo Missi »

So yea. We got the parrot bug. It was pretty much inevitable *roll*

We spent about 2 hours at The Naples Aviary today talking with the ladies who work there, holding the baby parrots, and trying to decide between cages. One of the ladies breeds lovebirds. I never knew how sweet, playful, and amazing these birds are.
My boyfriend quickly fell in love with this 8 week old hand feed lovie. We were playing with him after we played with the blue crowned conures and the lil guy kept flapping from one of us to the other. Their chips and chatter are sooo sweet. We're both pining and missing it so talked about it and plan on paying tomorrow and picking him up in a couple weeks when we get back from vacation. :D

The adventures never end!

MBS

Post by Cindy »

Oh no! Another person with MBS..See about a year ago I started out with one budgie. Well, of course the poor budgie had to have a friend. I met a lady in our neighborhood that just happened to be a breeder of birds....Now I have 2 cockatiels (male and female), 2 budgies (male and female), 2 lovebird babies (both male), and 2 ringnecks (male and female)...Everybody is VERY handtamed, except (and you guessed it) the ringnecks...Luna (male) is hand tamed, sort of, depends on if he WANTS to be...Baby Girl, is not hand tamed at all.....Now you were talking about getting a lovebird baby that is tame...My 2 babys are the sweetest little guys! They are soooooooooooooo much fun...they come when called and you have to peel them off of you to get them back into their cages...They give kisses and preen you...They will even feed you! I could never live without my Pickles or Peaches...However, I will say this, if you work outside your home get 2. They do need a lot of interaction during the day and lots of toys (swings, papertowel rolls, chinese finger trap for shredders, happy hut or something like a box with hole cut out they like to play hide and seek) Good Luck with your MBS!!

Hey Missi, be aware that lovies are not easy fids! They are cheeky and naughty and oh so playful... and worth every second!

Check out http://www.lovebirdsplus.com and their message board, really great info.

I would not trade my Audi bug for the world but man is he a handful!!!!

Oh man I got a taste of that. Even though the lil guy is clipped, he kept "flying" from my shoulder to my boyfriends then from the lady's finger to my head and then to my boyfriends shoulder. Then *preen preen preen* *chirp chirp chatter chatter* I love their lil noises. It's so soothing to us (but will probably be annoying to the roomies! *shrug*)

I told my boyfriend last night that we won't be able to have any carry on's when we travel in the future because we'll have a bird for each of us! (I have no idea what we'll do when we get more than 2 fids)

Thanks so much for that lovebird forum link! I was looking for one last night! Do tell me how cheeky they can be so I may be prepared! The lady who breed him says they are a big old handful and they do have attitude!

BTW, I don't know if I said, but he is a lil peachface. <3

P.S. Those who are not wanting another bird, never handle a lovebird. It will steal your heart!! :D

I lose Audi at least once a week because he is far too adventurous for his own good... only way to find him is to play with his toys and he gets pissy and comes out to attack you for touching HIS things!

Audi needs 24/7 attention, I have handraised him from a 15 day old chick so he has no idea he is a bird, tried getting him another lovie for company but he would kill it, he beats up Datsun

If you work or are away from home for more than a couple of hours you need to get two as they seriously NEED company, they will pine all day otherwise. I am lucky enough that all my fids come to work with me frequently and have a ball.

Lovies go through about 10x the toys ringnecks do, Auds costs me a fortune in toys, at least 3 a week and we rotate every 2 days. He is soooo active he just plays hard all day. His cage is huge, because it needs to accomodate all his toys and have space for him to run and play, it needs to have heaps of floor space because they love to roll around on the floor with cat toys... Audi's cage is approx. 70cm tall x 1m longx 60cm wide and he uses every bit of that space.

The great thing about having multiple fids is that toys can be rotated around cages so whats old for the lovie will be brand new for the IRN! And lovebirds just don't know they are tiny, they think they're a cross between a macaw and a rottweiler and definately have NO fear. They eat the same things but don't expect Baby and the lovie to get along because lovies are terribly feisty...

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, they are sooo much fun and loving towards their fave person. I can watch Audi play for hours, and playing fetch with a tiny fast birdie is oh so cute! 8)

And I too am in LOVE with Chamon's Audi! If she weren't a world away from me I'd be at her house all the time watching Dats and Audi and just feeling warm fuzzies in my heart the entire time. Love those two. And you too Chamon!

Hugs,

Well Jen if you ever are on this side of the world you are more than welcome!

Audi is currently being babysat by one of the girls at work... she fell in love with him one day and decided she wants one. I cant fully explain how much work they are so I told her as best I could and then told her if she really wants one, she can look after Audi for a week and see how that goes first.

I know she will look after him, I have full trust in her ability to care for him but I MISS MY BABY!! Never been away from him even for a single day! I am the classic overprotective mum, I call twice a day to hear him scream and ask her a million questions about him via text messages, and its only day 2!! What was I thinking? I know hes having a ball, playing with her and not having to share attention with any other birds but I WANT MY WEE MAN BACK...... NOW!

Welcome to the club; however, I find that my taste keeps getting more and more expensive. I think my next bird will be a grey but that will be a few years down the road. Good luck and make sure u both spend a lot of time together with the new one, that way he will bond to both of you and see you two as parents!!!

Thanks...I know, my taste is getting more expensive too. We want to some day get a military macaw and eclectus (he wants female, I want male!) But Sunday we were going to get a cherry head conure or a blue crowned but neither warmed up to us like the lovie did. Sweet lil lovie kept himself glued to the font of the cage chattering away and running back and fourth! I would walk by the cage there and dtick my finger in and he would kiss it.

I'm wondering how we're going to have the 2 out together. Maybe the lovie on one of our shulders and Baby on the other's chest while we're relaxing on the couch...I dunno! We shall see!! :D

Lovies

Post by Cindy »

Yep, I agree! Lovies are tiny BIG parrots. When I have my 2 out, they try to fly to the ringnecks cage...not afraid of ANYTHING. Not even the dog!! They give him the business from their cage...Toys, yep, lots of toys! and more toys! My two lovies to run around on the floor too! I put a small play gym on the floor and they jump off the top and run around flapping and flying about 3 feet off the ground...I keep mine clipped or they would fly to the other cages and the dog crates....WARNING! I have been hand taming various species of baby lovebirds for my breeder...I have found that as young babies you can mix the peachfaces with the Fishers or the Black Masks, BUT when they get about 5 mths the will attack each other. The peachfaces go for the white ring around the other species eyes.......Pickles was our 1st peachface lovie and we had him for 2 mths before we got the other one...I had a batch of 4 babies here to hand tame and I let Pickles pick his own friend. Its true, if you buy one and you want it to have afriend, you should buy them about the same time. Otherwise they get very possive of you and won't share.......

And I thought I had my hands full now with my boyfriend and Baby! I love to stay super overloaded busy so having a lil lovie sounds great! I know it sounds crazy, but I thrive on being overloaded and I always get everything done in a timely manner! We would get 2 lovies but we don't want Baby to feel like a third wheel (this is actually my boyfriends thought! ). What do y'all think?

My boyfriend really preffers the female coloring and I really preffer the male's coloring!

Another to my lovebird buddies......
I already got food for him. I read that AviCakes are the best to feed lovies. I got him a pack of those. They are like 80% pellets, the rest being good seed. I will also feed Nutriberries and the usual veggies and fruit that Baby gets.

Males are 'sweeter' in general than the females. The females can be moody little things but I have met a few that aren't. I've met lots of males that are sooo sweet...of course I adore my own Bodi.

Though I am so confused now! I saw a Solomon Island female a few days ago and she was tiny compared to my big ol boy. I don't think he is a SI anymore...maybe a hybrid or something because he is BIG
