Why Bite?

Post by paddyowner »

My Lutino ringneck, Paddy has become so well behaved over the last few months. When we first got him (He was nearly 3 months old) he used to lunge at us if we tried to take him out of his cage. He's now 14 months old. Since we moved house 3 months ago, he has been great. He would get on our hands as soon as we open his cage and would try anything not to have to go back in! Over the last week or so, he has started biting my lip for no reason, and it REALLY hurts! He will be sitting on my shoulder quietly and then just go for me out of the blue! Can anyone tell me why he would do this? Also, can anyone explain why Paddy keeps regurgitating his food and then swallowing it again? :?:

off the shoulder! no more shoulder time until he learns to behave. I've owned a lot of larger birds and unless you really really trust them they are never allowed on the shoulder, I've seen bad things happen! being on the shoulder is also a privlage not a right because it's a dominance thing I was told by a bird trainer, it's high up and a spot of authority!
he is still settling into his new place, there also could be something different, new smell? new sights that disturb him? the littlest of things can set them off! or because he's also still VERY young! it could be just a faze. I'm sure other bird people here will have more insight! :)
my guess for the regurtiating is it's not fully digested, or is it? what does it look like when it comes out?

Question Paddy

Post by Haifa »

Hey paddyowner,

When you first got your bird, you said the bird was sort of mean? Then after having him or her for a while, the bird got better, fun loving and everything? I just got a bird, Kiwi is 4 months old, and im worried that Kiwi will never just wanna step-up or be on my shoulder or anything of that sort. Kiwi is very good as far as bitting, has only bit me once and that was the first day of having Kiwi. It seems like everytime i go to play with him or her (im not sure what sex it is) the bird crawls up to the highest corner in the cage. I just wanted to ask, and maybe see if you had any tips for a new bird owner who's just trying to get their bird to be more social.

Thanks so much

hi haifa

just give it time all you have to do is hand feed her every now and then you know give her treats like raisins, grapes etc. she will start to bite once she settles down but that shouldn’t last very long(hopefully)

I have a 10 wk old hen named India. Sweet girl and so fun to watch. She likes to be AT me but no touch. She will tolerate it for a stoke or two but then she has had enough. If I dont stop touching, she squacks and looks at me like "mom look, I really love you. I just dont like being touched... can you be ok with that?"

She loves to perch near me and on me she just hates when I come to her for it. She wants to come to me. Fine, I'll take her love as I can get it.

She is good with up and down ONLY with a small stick. NO HANDS. Otherwise she retreats too. Try the stick technique. I'll explain that is you'd like, let me know.
