No leg band...
I got my young lutino from a pet store called Pet Supermarket. She didn't have a leg band when I looked at her. I asked the people who work there and they said they have a new breeder they get birds from and she didn't come with leg bands. I was under the impression that all captive bred birds must have a leg band. Maybe I'm wrong? I'm worried she may be a captive caught baby now. Someone please confirm. Thanks!

I live in Tampa. Florida Law states sweetheart, YES... your bird should be banded.
I would have a long talk with that breeder and find out where the bird ACTUALLY came from OR WHY he isnt banding his chicks. This isnt cool either way.
Two scenarios going on here:
1. Bird came here from another state, but still should have been banded upon arrival and birds RARELY come in Florida because we do all the breeding here anyway. No point.
OR
He isnt following state law.
Either way, you deserve to know.

is there any way to get a band to band your own bird? My lovebirds do not have bands either and I think bands (especially diff colors) would help to identify them. Not nevessary on a daily basis but would sure be helpful when trying to capture a specific bird from the flight cage for whatever reason...kim
with the leg bands who actually controls the laws that say they have to be banded and what happens to say a pet store that sells them without a band.here we dont have to have them banded as far as i know, but dogs or cats have to be microchipped either when sold/given away or over the age of 6 months.we have to have a special licence to keep some birds.

The purpose for banding:
To be able to back track that chick to his breeder. Thats all its good for, nothing more, nothing less. If a chick isnt banded and has been displaced from the original breeder, then no purpose for banding it.
Leg bands ARE NOT USED for Identification except if a bird is found I happen to have my Baby's tag number but thats not what its used for and NOONE could get me my baby back with just that band info. At best, it could only help me prove she was my baby.

Hmm I got her from a pet store. DO you think I should go back to the store and see if they will give me the breeder information? Or since bands are just used to i.d. the breeder, should I not worry about it? I am worried now. I really wonder why she doesn't have one. Maybe I shouldn't be worried (I really do tend to *over* worry about everything)?

They wouldnt have taken a band off for two reasons:
All Floridian birds are to be sold banded from the breeder, TO TRACK THE BIRD BACK TO THE BEEDER, not for identification purposes.
And 2: Taking a leg band off is a HUGE risk, which is why our babies still have theirs on (that are banded).
All the lack of a band means is YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO TRACK THE BIRD TO THE BREEDER.
Thats all, nothing more nothing less.

No punkin... dont feel that way.
Maybe the baby got here from like Jersey, where they dont have to band.
The bird is no more or less worthy than any of ours. Many of ours arent banded because its not law. Dont sweat it baby, really. Dont.
What, now, does it really matter where she came from? You're in love.
Youre a worry wart like I. Think of something else to worry about. I too need something hehe.

legs bands
more and more breeder are shying away from leg bands not due to it getting caught on to stuff liek cages, there is now a new chipping that is being implimented by vets on the right breast bone of the bird or in the shoulder, so bird being branded means nothing now days my irn is not branded.
