Getting worried...

Post by Mikaela »

Ok, not really mentioned it as not to let it start getting to me but now... I cant ignore it hoping it will go away. Im actually VERY worried about Baby.

He is 13 months old. In the past week, feathers are just falling out of him. He leaves a trail like grettel everywhere he goes.

I dont even want to talk about the bottom of his cage. Alot there. He is preening more than usual but I havent seen him pluck, thats is my worst fear. He is always too busy causing me problems to pluck so I need to get that out of my head.

Off track a bit but he has also started doing his nails, amen. To the point a dont feel a trim will be needed any longer. They have always been trimmed short and he prefers that so they dont get caught up in fabric. Smart fid.

Anyway, back to his feathers:

Isnt 13 months off target for a moult?

Do they shed in the summer?

If this is indeed a moult, will it be his adult moult (ring or no ring). In the past two weeks he has developed a black ring underneath his neck. Ring is a strong word but it it obvious the ring that was once all lime is now turned dark under his neck.

Help me feel better. Isnt black ok? Meaning a ring might come and nothing else?

Hey Mikaela,
I know nothing about this subject, but Byndi always seems to be moulting! I swear she and Milo drop feathers all the time. She's always got little pin feathers and tiny feathers falling out. Her tail right now is a joke! Nothing much to it. Remmi went thru that huge moult where he got rid of all his barring and hasn't been thru anything like it since. But Byndi seems like she does it all the time.

I know that probably doesn't make you feel better, but I wish I could help. I'd give ya a hug if I were there. :D

Im probably over-reacting but I worry so about a disease or a condition making my baby uncomfortable and ugly.

Never forget... worse thing I ever seen, regarding birds was about 6 months ago. I had been doing research on illnesses and what to look for and happened upon a ratty looking macaw in a cage at the flea market. As I looked closer, his beak had NEVER been trimmed and he looked BADLY deformed.

Had I not know better from my research. I would have thought it was beak and feather or something... but no. Neglect. I couldnt find it in me to control myself, was escorted out and cant even go back to that flea market anymore.

But when I left, every damn body in that whole place had HEARD ME. I can only pray I rediculed them enough to obtain a conscience. I dont know because Im banned from there.

Totally lost it, thats why I never mentioned it... not real proud of losing my cool but when it comes to animals, no holds barred.

It was so bad his beak was off set and looked so unconfortable. Why would they have him on display? None of it made sense. I dont have to tell you had my man not been there I would have walked out with that bird, regardless of finances, cages, nothing would have stopped me.

But, as he said... I cant save them all.

Mik...Prinny also is moulting like crazy. I think they have two a year, one to shed the little feathers and one to let go of the larger ones. Also some birds just seem to moult all year round. Nothing to worry about *hands Mik a berry*

Thats how Baby acts sometimes. Friggin freak.

He'll just strike out and then get this look like whoa, why did I do that... sorry.

Call me nuts but I see expression in Baby's face.

He is a lil bi-polar but tries to maintain himself as best he can

goro thank you SO much for that post.

The feathers freak me out man! But whats weird is she doesnt look all messed up like her baby moult. First time parront.

Should I, just to be sure, take pics of his cage (the feathers) because it has some poppy in it and is time for a tear down. So, I'll snap some now... if you even think it is needed.

My tiel is dropping feathers to but they are so dusty and feathery anyway Im not all that worried.

Yeah Baby is getting the tale tale black ring pretty good at the bottom of his neck.

So my Baby is going to look really ratty? Own it and get over it?

Uhm, how long will he look that way?

Post by goro »

few weeks at most it all depends the bird. *baby is gonna bite possibly draw blood so keep that in mind when letting any animals or children near her, but by no means should u not handle him, or he won't be tame* kind of like a teenager you never know how it is going to go. I would also increase the green/ colorful fruits and veggies. Although not proven many breeder and owner swear by it, I personally don't buy it but then again mine gets fruits and veggies all day long. You might find yourself changing water bowl more often then usual because of feather in it.

 well Mik ... i, for one, am VERY proud of you for raising hell about the macaw!! i would've done the same thing ... there's an African grey just up the street in a smallish cage in a flower shop that i'd take home in a heartbeat, but they won't give her up! i pop in occasionally to talk to the bird & i have NEVER .. i repeat, NEVER seen that cage clean ... getting any authorities around here to do anything for the bird is like pulling teeth ... i learned that the hard way with some feral cats at my job ... anyway, there are always just LAYERS of poo in that cage ... i don't think that it's been cleaned in the 6 months that i've known her ... further, i've NEVER seen her outside of the cage ... hmmmmmm **note to self: time to check on Grey** ... maybe i'll call the shelter & see wut they say ... prolly just "we don't have time & resources ... call Animal Control (who, by the way, DOES NOT care!) ... we have a no-kill shelter here & i understand that they're EXTREMELY busy, but gimme a break ... Animal Control will pick up a dog in a heartbeat, but birds ... another story ... they're prejudiced, that's wut!! ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ... ok, it's ony 5-something in the morning & i'm already jacked up!! **deep, cleansing breath** :?

my Daddy always told me, "you can't save the world, but you CAN make a difference ... ONE animal at a time" ... this is why my home is always open to take in orphans.

Already jacked up lol

I like you *punches you in the arm and peeks down your shirt while you arent paying attention.*

Thats the story of my life! I stay 'jacked up' and have just referred to it as 'wired for sound' but Imma steal that from you.

Perfect... Jacked-up

Im from NC hun so, probably like yourself, I dont hesitate to woop **** and take names later. Huge tomboy.

I'll put it to you like this... my man runs like a little girl from me. Usually out the door with words flying from him like fired 'She is crazy!' I'll grit and frying pan a man in a NY minute. Might be bigger than me but not meaner and thats what counts.

Its funny though because a good wind would blow me away but when I get mad I get 'crazy strength' is what I call it and anyone that knows me, be it man or woman, knows and flees lol. I honestly have had to fight more men that girls to the point I feel bad to fight a girl. Its not a fair fight. I fight like a man.

*hands everyone a Dr's note*

he's from WAY up north (Virginia :P) & sez he ain't never met a woman QUITE like me before. (hell, half the time, he can't even understand me!) roflmao! all i hafta say is, "you're down here now ... LEARN THE LANGUAGE!"

The ring comes in between 18 months and 3 years. Maybe Baby is an early starter.

And, if I took a pic of Buddy right now you'd feel a LOT better. He does monster molts... I mean it. I tested him for PBFD the first two years because he molts so bad, every feather on his head drops off then comes back, just a solid bunch of pins. He looks terrible. It goes away in about a month and he's back to gorgeous.

BTW, Buddy got a light black ring ... but a ring for sure... at nine months. His next molt was the one where the deep black and the other colors came in. ;)
