Hey, I'm a new member. I probably won't be too terribly active, but I thought I would join. I know hardly anything about IRNs, but I'm willing to learn. I have a cockatiel named Geordy and am currently taking care of a young sparrow I rescued, that I've been calling Zephyr. I am thirteen years old, and anyone who looks down at me because of that will die a painful death.

Lol, good. Sorry if I came across a little strong, it just irritates me when people don't respect me because I'm young. My teachers do that all the time, and it makes me want to leave school.
Grrrr.
And, another thing, I'm probably what you would call an irresponsible bird owner. I can't handle Geordy at all and hardly give him any attention except to feed him. The reason I joined is because I want to be able to be a better bird owner, and you all seemed very intelligent and experienced. He loves attention but hisses and threatens to bite whenever I get close to his cage. I feel so sorry for him and need some help in doing better with him. So if you guys could please not flame me and just try and help me out, I would way appreciate that.

Welcome, I'm a new member too and a new owner of an IRN, blue that I named Nila (the Hindu word for blue). My bird is a baby still, just about 14 weeks old. I haven't had to tame a bird that was dificult to handle so I haven't got any bits of wisdom for you except it will be well worth your while, when you've got a companion that loves being with you. So keep at it and best of luck to you and your Tiel.

Where abouts are you from?
Around southeast Nebraska, the land of corn and cows.

That's the reason that I want to try harder to tame him, because I hear all about how sweet and playful your birds are and I wish that he was more like that.
By the way, does anyone know if there are any ways to teach cats not to mess with a bird? We have three cats, and we have to lock them in somewhere whenever we let him out. We haven't done that in ages, because they hate to be locked up and it's almost impossible to get him back in, because his wings aren't clipped so he can easily stay out of our reach.
Is there anyway you could take him to the vet and get them trimmed, or even an experienced pet store that handles birds will do it sometimes. Maybe if his wings were clipped and you could get him in and out he would respond better to you. I had a pair of cockatiels a long time ago and I remeber reading about how to tame them. You had to take them in a room by themselves close the door, remove all distractions and then let them out and get them in both hands and gently coo and pet them until they stop struggling. Kind of a forced socialization. I'm pretty sure you'd have to have the wings clipped to do that. Mine would struggle for a few seconds but then calm right down and let me hold them. I did not have them long enough to follow through on completely taming them because our house sold and we moved unexpectedly from Texas to NC. So I found them a good home in Texas. Hope that helps a little.
