Hi everyone, I'm a new member and just purchased a new baby blue irn. Brought him home yesterday. He's pretty and beginning to adjust a little. He's timid and flies away from me in the cage or out of it, but never tries to bite. He's only 12 weeks old. So I've read some conflicting info on parrot care in general and want some help sorting it out. Some info says to place new parrot in cage and not too much interaction for the first week or two until the bird gets comfortable with his new home. But with IRN I've seen it stressed to handle the bird every day. I think I should handle him for short periods several times a day but maybe I'll stress him too much.
He spent the night hanging on the side of his cage, still in the same place when I got up this morning. Now at least he's moving around the cage and has been eating and drinking and playing with one of the toys.
What do you guys think? (Any suggestions for a name, I've been trying to find the Hindi word for blue anybody know it?)
Thanks: Sue

Hi Susan, and welcome. I'm new too. I've never owned a baby IRN, but I've always let mine have a few days to get adjusted before we start handling them. I think it's best to just sit near them, talk to them softly, let them know you aren't going to hurt them and can be trusted. They need to get used to their new surroundings as I'm sure it must be very confusing to them.
I'm sure others with baby bird experience will give you some better advice.
Oh, and congratulations on the new baby!! Got any pictures?

I just got my baby a week and a half ago and he is twenty weeks,he was not tame when I got him as he was parent reared.I just sat and spoke to him first day and then spoke with hand in cage.I took cage to another room with no distractiond and took him out and started doing step up with him.I just went along with him, took my cues from his body language.Havent been bitten yet,but it is early days.He now jumps up on my hand if I am near him and lets me stroke him,he also rubs his beak on my chin.He hasnt shown signs of nervousness but he wont go to anyone else yet,if they try he just jumps straight back to me.I read loads of stuff and everything told me different things so I just used common sense and this forum where everyone is helpful.

New baby blue irn
Thanks for the welcome and the help. The baby is doing well and adjusting to his cage. Still does not like the cover. Last night I just kept it bunched up on the seed guard so he could see it, but he still slept hanging on the bar of the cage with one foot and the other foot on a frizzy string grooming toy I hung in the cage. Tonight he's climbed up to the mineral perch I put at the top of the cage and he's roosting there. I brought him home Friday around 4pm and today is Sun. I opened the door and he came right to the front of the cage and stepped onto my hand. I feel like a mother who just saw her baby take it's first step. Wow. I already love this little guy. I am not computer smart. I took some pics but not sure yet how to post them to this site. It will take me a while to figure this out.
Thanks again and I'll post a pic soon as I can.
