Training from scratch
Okay, I've had Seppo for a week now. Yesterday was a big day when he for the first time took a peanut from my hand! Today he's increasingly less shy about my hand. How do you think I should continue? Seppo is not hand-reared.
fiona is the same way. To get her out of the cage, i attatched a perch on the outside and put treats out there to bribe her out. once out, i would close the door(some people do not agree with this method, but it worked for me). then I would use a dowl perch to move her away from the cage into a "neutral territory" where she cannot see her cage. Eventually, I got her to step-up on my arm. I still have to use my arm because she is terrified of fingers. However, she will let me kiss her. Everytime yours does something you like give it a treat....it may be too scared out of the cage to accept treats so just verbally encourage it. i worked with Fiona at the pet store where I work(2 mnths, but not everyday) and have had her home for 4 days. I open the top of her cage when I'm home and today, i opened it up and went into the other room. She climbed out and wistled for me and stepped immediatly on my arm. This is the first time I have heard any kind of noise from her beak so I was pretty excited. Anyway, she still has an attitude and has her bad days, but she is making progress. It takes a long time. Although fiona was hand-fed, she was not tame and bit someone through a glove and left marks days later when we first got her. Sorry about the novel. I hope this helps.
We are doing very well with Seppo. He comes to my hand daily to get treats (really sits on my hand but only just for awhile). He sits on the monitor as I use my computer and nibbles my hair. Talk about nice haircut!
He want's to taste everything I eat, and if he decides it's good and I won't give him more, he'll rob it from me. Seppo is SO adorable these days (when he doesn't scream) and improving by day. One of these days he'll let me pet him. I wish.
