Wing clipping
I was just wondering do you clip you IRN's wings? or do you take them somewhere. lou needs his clipped, I know i won't be able to do it. But I can't afford to pay alot to get them clipped. How much do you guys pay for getting your fids wings clipped?
~the stubborn one~

Hey Gwen,
I took my irns to the vet for their first wing clipping and I believe they charged $11. But I also had them do a check up. So I don't know if I just brought them in for the wing clip if I'd have had to pay for the visit as well. And that alone is $40. I'm going to try it next time on my own. He showed me how to do it. Don't know if I'll be able to do Byndi's but I think I can Remmi's. And I've always done Milo's. So...

They fall for it everytime! Smart yes, easily manipulated, again yes. Beacause they are so busy trying to manipulate they dont even realize they are being manipulated... you know, like my old man... yeah, like that.

Kai had his done at the vet the first time.. and I watched and asked lots of questions $44.00. (i'm a keen learner in life) Second time ... hubby held him and I clipped .. every other bird I can do myself no help from hubby.
But note, you have to know what you are doing and be confident about it, or it just aint worth risking your baby.

I would like to see all of us getting clips from breeders if not 100% confident, like myself.
A bad wing job is not only unsightly but SO UNFAIR to the bird. Imagine if one of your legs were different than the other? Something to think about.
Also, if a bird isnt trimmed correctly... the feathers can actually cause the bird pain.
Not to mention cutting a blood feather. Ok, Im getting worked up now.
*deep breath*
Lets just all get it done professionally, unless we are a professional. PLEASE.

indie hated me for weeks after i took him to the petshop to have it done.but the petshop would only clip one wing,so i wait till indie is in a real sooky mood and he lets me do it.but he is a totally different bird when he has his wings clipped so i will have to wiegh up the pros and cons for clipping before he has it done again.

Clipping wings isnt so hard. you can read my article, I wouldnt pay so much to have it done. $40 to clip a few feathers is absolutly insane. Man I should have that job.

Just my experience:
I clip bird wings at the pet hospital where I am a veterinary technician. We only see cats and dogs but since I am familiar with birds and know how to do the grooming aspect of it, the vet lets me see bird patients for wing clips and nail trims (I will not do beaks; I know how to do them, I just won't do them for various reasons).
Anyway, we charge $7.85 for wing clipping; we just made it the same price as for nail trims (birds, cats, or dogs).
I take my own birds into work with me to have the other techs do their nails so I am not the bad guy.
I don't clip nor do I have my bird's wings clipped, though. I am not against it; I am actually pro-wing clipping; however, I have four cats in the house and I keep them grown out in the rare and odd event that they should ever pick their locks and get out of their cages when I'm not around...and a cat is.
I'm sure if you just called around to the local vets and found one who knows how to do it, or to the breeder even, you can find one who will do it for fairly cheap.

I clip all my guys, but for years I took them to a groomer. I knew how, but I trusted my groomer and it was easier for me. I hate it when they are mad at me, and the ringnecks get mad for a while after a clip.
Now, we do home visits for our clients (former residents) and for special referrals to groom. We charge $35.00 for wings and nails, in the birds home. Thats less than our old vet charged us to bring them to the office. Boy was he expensive.
Our new vet will do a wings/nails/beak package (beaks on when needed, and has to be medically evaluated) for $16.00 per bird. We take Char in for his beak every time (we know how, but the vet is faster and hey, he's trained for years!) and we will take some of the other birds in for grooming...
I guess what I'm saying is that even if you really know your stuff, and your comfortable doing it, sometimes its still easier and safer to have a professional do it. One pair that we groom lives with a couple who are a vet tech and a vet... but they prefer that we do it because its easier for the birds to be mad at us
. Let someone else take the fall when you can, you already have to take it for things like cleaning the cage

Gotta be careful where u get the clipping done. When i took poska into the vet to get the wings clipped the vet cut the feathers too close to the wing, and there was blood all over my nice yellow bird, at least the vet put something on the wing to stop it bleeding... i'm not going back to that vet again, i'm going to find one that specialises in birds or do it my self.
when i got the poska home s/he looked like a mess. it took about half an hour of carefull cleaning around blood feather to get her/him lookin healthy again... poor bird.

Its 5 bux a wing at any pet store or breeders here in the US.
Im sorry, shouldnt speak for an entire nation... that is the rate here in Florida. Most breeders just do it and give you your bird back with a 'go ahead, dont worry about it' wave. In those cases, I spend money there buying 20 dollars worth of stuff.
I would have it made but my breeder is very touchy and sexual with me, with his wife present!. Im not one to be made easily uncomfortable but touching me is my weakness. If I dont live with you, feed you and wash your clothes... keep your damn hands off of me. My friends are the exception but they too can keep their hands to themselves.
So, thats why Baby is full-flighted now, my breeder creeps me out so badly. Any other ladies ever meet a guy like that, seemed fine at first but then took a turn for the worst and now he creeps you out? Hate to be 'creeped' out... would rather be anything but 'creeped' out.
Not to bring up bad stuff but as a child I was touched, ofcourse, without my permission so now, it doesnt take much touch from a stranger to make me want to drop them to the floor like a loaf of bread. Makes me feel like I did when I was a little girl and was powerless to my situation. i.e. shame, thats unfortunately what a child feels... silent shame. Scared to tell and horrifed not to.... we suffer in silent lucidity. Predators know that and use that. Please TELL YOUR CHILDREN THERE ARE SICKOS OUT THERE AND IF THEY ARE EVER MADE TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE TO TELL YOU. YOU WILL BELIEVE THEM AND HELP THEM. Even if its their Daddy, Mama, brother, doesnt matter. I use to lay in bed enduring that listening for my moms footsteps to come down the hall to save me and they never did.

Thats what my husband said! He said thats the only way in the world his wife would not only be Ok with it but encourage it.
She is as sweet as he is and she looks at me like I havent noticed a chick looking at me before, which goes back to me being creeped out. Sorta like the look a guy has when he is interested.
Too bad she isnt hot... should try everything once hahaha. As for her ol' man... he would be axed from the get-go. -chringes-
And you know what hun? I actually DID take my son the last time and the man seemed irritated, like he didnt know me AND chanrged me for the first time ever.
He then asked me before leaving if my son was my new boyfriend. (We are only 15 yrs apart) and Im kinda young looking, he is kinda old looking so we are mistaken for a couple often. We cant hold hands or be affectionate in public anymore because we look about the same age.
Makes me look like Im robbing the cradle. Walking through the mall we hear 'that dude scored him a hot a** M I L F!! And thats when we realized why we get very strange looks. They think my son is my younger lover.

that just sounds so weird and creepy.is there someone else you could get to do it for you?its pretty bad when you cant go shopping with your son without people commenting like that.aaron makes jokes at me because i just turned 27 and he is still 26 till september i could only imagine what people say,but hey its the in thing these days they prob think they would offend more if they said your son and it was your lover.

never really thought of that.
Im 30ish but I dress more like teens because thats all that will fit me. So, Im sure thats throws people too.
Thanks hun, never thought of it from others point of view. It wouldnt be good if they said 'your mama' and we were lovers.
I'll be much more tolerate of peoples misunderstanding from now on. For real, thanks for that perspective... never considered that.
