I was in the kitchen doing the dishes and feeding my IRNs. i Noticed that my new IRN (who had a feather plucking problem) was growing new feathers. I was looking at them and then i noticed his chest which has a huge hard lump. the skin here feels like a callous and is more firm than the rest of his body. What could this be here are some pics, i am in such a panic, and i am supposed to be leaving in the morning for san francisco for a school trip. Please post back ASAP i wont turn my computer off till i leave!

Dude, that is so not good. I dont know what it is but I'd be getting it to a vet.

I dont want to scare you but Im sure you know what hard masses usually are? I dont know how common cancer is in IRNs.

Maybe he landed hard on his chest bone really hard?

minimum infected hair folicle or when he/she has plucked scratched with beak and it blows up like that or something more serious either way it should be seen by a vet because the infection could lead to septicemia and if it is a cancerious lump the earlier it is caught and treated the better. how long has it been like that is it just since new feathers have come thru.

Yep, it looks like an impacted follicle. Off to the vet, its the only way.

BTW, Kato's plucking started over an impacted follicle that no one noticed for a long while, and by the time they got it treated (her prior home) she had developed the habit. It's best to deal with it as fast as you can, as its painful :(

It is difficult to imagine what this mass could be. I hope you are able to get it checked out by a avian vet and have it resolved happily.

When you get an anomaly like that on the skin of a bird douse the general area with alcohol to wet it down and to flatten the downy feathers so you can get a real good look at the area. Bird skin is so thin you can see through it to blood vessels, muscle, and things like that mass.

Is it in the skin or is it in the crop; maybe a developing crop problem or the breast? If you have been petting and playing with your irn and didn't notice the mass before now then it probably developed quickly and that would most likely be an infection rather than a tumorous growth.

I hope it is an impacted feather and nothing more serious.

Good luck.

id say its more an infection because if you look at the first pics of the new bird it has a smallish lump and then it has blown up 10 times its size pretty quick.the vet will probably drain it and give antibiotics.

Well when i got home i was happy to see my bird was doing ok, it even appeared that the lump had gone away, but after like 20 minutes i noticed it was back again. I am off to the vet tomorrow first thing in the morning, i shall let you know

Whew ! thank God .. I was looking at it, and I know nothing about lumps and cancer and such like the others would. I thought.. I wonder if it is and hope it is just the crop, especially when you said it was down and then suddenly up and hard again. But to suggest it's just that could make you complacent to a real issue, so I kept out of it.

Glad its all fine and dandy !

Did the vet say "craw" or crop?

Did the vet say "craw" or crop?

The crop is basically a sac in which food can be stored and the digestive process started. It should get big when the fid is chowing down and small when it is empty--but there should never, not ever, be a solid mass in it that lasts longer than your birds digestive cycle.

If there is a persistant mass in the crop it may be an impaction of undigestible stuff that isn't passing and which can become infected.

good to hear that all is well with your bird.
