new food

Post by berrynice »

Just wondering if anyone else has fed their IRNs craisins. I've started scattering a few with the freash fruit and veg and Bhanu loves them. Fresh fig is also a hit as is dehydrated mango. The mango is air dried so no yuckies in it.

They love mango! Yummy.

Short of avocado, chocolate and alcohol... they can eat anything we eat. Easy, safe rule to live by.

Right guys? Please correct me if I forgot a food.

Sunflower seeds are ok but DO (in most IRNs and in mine especially) attribute to much aggression. Im sorry but I cant tell you why. I can only assure you the myth is true, they do.

Baby gets them too but in very low moderation.

She was once a vicious little thing. I know... hard to believe but she was literally VICIOUS.

One day everyone said 'take the sunflower seeds away and see if there is a difference'.

There was, within a week there was a night and day difference. Then a few months later my man bought her food and it was so full of sunflower seeds... just not a good brand. He knew no better.

But within a week of being on that sunflower seed infested bag of food she was back to lunging and just being a brat.

Moderation is ok... like 10 a week. TOPS. Its sad though because she loves them so dearly.

anyone know why sunflowers 'cause' agression? my critters love them, but also can do without them...and I haven't seen a behaviour change when feeding the sunflowers or not feeding them...

raisns are fun...better than grapes haha because i always find grape bits flung on the walls! at least raisins are dried! mango, papya, pineapple and apple bits are my guys favourites!

Im sorry angelface, I dont know but someone here does I'd bet. Because they told me of the whole agression thing to begin with.

I want to say it was MazziesMom but dont quote me on that. Maybe Pm her and ask if she knows.

Perhaps it effects some birds and not others. It makes my lil girl hateful.

Used dehydrated mango due to cost and less wastage when trying something new. I use the term yuckies for artificial chemicals, colours, flavours etc. Down in Sth Oz mangoes can be hideously expensive except during the right season. Guess we can add banana to expensive fruits now thanks to the cyclone!

Scarley likes mangos, and peaches, and I'm lucky to have peach trees outside my back door. And strawberries are a hit with her and she's rather funny looking after making a great big mess! lol

Hrm, sunflower doesnt cause aggression as far as I know. I know its been claimed to do so, but I havent seen it myself. But, I dont feed it, so I could just be missing out on seeing it. I don't feed it because its fatty, and some birds will eat it and nothing else if they get a chance. Not a healthy diet.

Craisins BTW spook me because of the sulphur. They are preserved with it, and it has been loosely linked to plucking and other issues. I make sure all the dried fruits we feed our crew is sulpha free.

I prefer fruits and veggies from our garden and our trees, but they don't produce all year round :( . Frozen strawberries are a huge treat btw, in the summer when its killer hot. Picked at the peak of ripe, and cold to boot.. the birds LOVE them!

The craisins I give my girls are sugar and cranberries. I'm very aware of preservatives such as sulphur and always check the ingredients. In Oz everything has to be labled (not sure what goes on everywhere else). I hav been known to buy organic almonds for my birds too.

Jia just love those sunflowers! It's in his food-mixture and when I give him food he fisrt picks the sunflowerseeds. Then he eats the rest. He's not agressive. But I know that sunflowers has too much fat so I'm thinking of taking it away from the daily food and try to use it as a treat while I'm training him.
As it is now he gets fruit (he loves apple), seeds who have been in water for 12-24 hours and green pepper (he loves that to) at the top och the cage. I would like to give him the goodies on top of the cage. After a while I attend to take the treats in my hand and try to give him the treat from my hand. Do you think that it will work as a step in a taming-process??
