Concerned... Barring
Hey everyone,
I'm starting to notice some barring ALL OVER Byndi! What could this be?? This is the first I've noticed it. He didn't come with any. And unless I'm seeing things it looks like it's coming in ALL OVER his ENTIRE body. And this really bothers me. Now he'll only eat seed--came this way. Can't get him at all interested in pellets. And he's only now started to eat fresh fruit. Doesn't seem at all interested in veggies. So... Anyone got any ideas or suggestions??
Thanks,
Jen

I found that my birds have certain times of the days that they like to eat.
And they tend to Communal eat much better than eating in their cage.
When we sit down to lunch or dinner, their communal plate comes out. We started with jordan pestering us, once kai saw that jordan got all this attention and food , he decided it was time to come down off his high horse (or stand rather) and join in. We have a big communal tray now and we have the tiel and budgies joining in too. They never have fruit and veg on their stands or in their cages anymore. They are fed out with us at lunch and dinner and seem to each much better this way.
I use to clean up plates of uneaten food before. Not now.
Seed/pellet is truly secondary now, they eat basically nibbles of it each day, I only need to change or top up their seed/pellets .. gosh.. once a week ? and its left in their cage, but they never go for it anymore.
Maybe you just need to work out a different time or place to offer them their fruit and veg.
Also its easy for me to do this because we are home alot and they have run of thier birdroom which backs onto our living room, so they have free access to that aswell. They basically come and go as they please.
But I am sure you could work out, bringing remmi out to eat with you, giving him his own plate and then Byndi might naturally want to join in.
Cheers and Goodluck !

Bailey never used to eat fruit and veg, but he liked eating it when he saw i was eating it! so then we made him eat with us... now he eats fine by himself and he loves different and new stuff he hasn't eaten! i never give him seed to messy unless i put him in his cage outside and sit with him with it! lol
i have too much time!

Angie,
You obviously don't have any four legged critters in your home. I so could NOT do the communal food while we eat thing. One of our three dogs would surely scarf it down. My birds usually don't touch the floor. Too many four legged critters and too many possibilities of accidents. Plus NONE of my birds like the others. Except sweet baby Milo. He loves everyone. The other two hate everyone. So... But thanks for the suggestions. I am just concerned that he's beginning to get the barring. I'm not really concerned about his eating habits as he is still eating what I brought him home on. I buy from the same place they did. I just don't understand why this is all of a sudden happening. And I'm afraid!

Barring can sometimes be because of poor diet, not on your part... the birds, perhaps.
Baby had barring for a short time when I was trying to convert her from seeds to actually food. She rebelled. Wanted no part of it, loved her seed.
I finally got her converted and the barring is now gone. I would keep and eye on whats he is eating.

What is barring? what does it look like? and what usually is the cause? My Luna is a picky eater. I have really tried to convert to pellets, but no luck so far. I still have to mix a fortified seed diet with the pellets. Is barring a diet thing or an illness? I think I see some little black marks on Lunas wing feathers. Is this just coloration or the barring??? I don't know any thing about barring, would like to find out more
